Copyrights and Contact Info.
OK, I know this may degenerate into a round-up-the-torches-and-pitchforks kinda thing, but really I'm just asking for advice.
Looking through my referrers today, I came across this.
Evidently, these are all the latest updates from these comics, so it's not a links page, it's a ripper. And as flattered as I am to be amongst a lot of popular comics (well, maybe not Garfield), this isn't cool, for reasons that have been much discussed. Obviously this is a kid who's a fan and wants to share his favorite comics with others and not some malicious dastardly villian trying to steal bandwith for its own sake, but it's copyright infringement in either case. I'd be OK with this page if it just had links featuring a sampled comic and they asked permission, but that's not what this is.
The person doesn't have any contact information. How do I get the person's attention to say that this isn't cool?

Well if this person is taking the latest comic, maybe make a comic about it stating your position? That's the only way I can think of getting his attention.yeahduff wrote: The person doesn't have any contact information. How do I get the person's attention to say that this isn't cool?

But it's not stealing bandwidth... is it? The files seem to be hosted on their server, I'm not sure how the files are obtained though.yeahduff wrote: Evidently, these are all the latest updates from these comics, so it's not a links page, it's a ripper.
As for translation... what about babblefish?
You are the Non. You must go now, and never return."
"1.Scan in high res 2.tweak with curves, levels or something to clean up the scan (or use channel mixer to remove blue pencil lines) 3.Add colour using a layer set to multiply. 4.Add wordbubbles and text as vector shapes. 5. Merge all layers. 6.resize to the web size. 7. Export/Save for Web" that's all I know about webcomicking.

One thing to note is that those university sites typically are only visited by the individual themselves. My guess is that the individual at hand was too lazy to click on links to their favorite comics, so instead they set up a little script to go get the comics for them.
I'm not saying that they are in the right, but it shouldn't impact your bandwidth too much (might even save you some depending on how their script works).

Somewhere along the line, I'm going to implement a cookie/javascript check that will "validate" that it's a real browser, browsers that ignore cookie/javascript code aren't real browsers. Real browsers do different things.Digital War wrote:That won't cause a problem considering the ads don't seem to load half the time will it?
I'm not trying to prevent people from saving the comics to their hard drive. That's insane. That's like anti-piracy sofware that is broken before the software is released.
No, i'm just trying to make it difficult for people to pull the comic without actually visiting the page
Why don't Keenspace ads show up in iframes?
I've set up a personal page that will load all my favorite news sites at one time in iframes, and I see all their beautiful advertisements. But when I tried it with comic sites, no keenspace ads showed up, and only 1 in 6 keenspot ads showed.
So I went back to visiting comics one at time. I'd like to use iframes to load 10 webpages at the same time, but I prefer generating adviews more.

More specifically: what types or information should not be on the Web? Most information can be made available on the Web. However, we feel that extreme political opinions, pornographic images, and copyrighted material should not be on our server.
The system management reserves the right to remove any document they feel violates this last rule.
