Well, what I used to do was to think in combinations of letters, as each Japanese symbol, be it katakana or Hirigana, is a combintion of a consonant and a vowel. I would take the letters and smush them together until I got a cool name.
Another method is to take pre-existing words and modify them. If you're really desperate, flip through a dictionary or a good book with your eyes closed and put your finger on a word, then tweak that word (or words surrounding it) into a name.
Or, if all else fails, keep your character's name ambiguous until you can think of a good name for him/her. You can use the character for several strips without ever using their name (I've done it once or twice... *coughs* but anyway...).
Or to really screw with readers, do something like...
"There are some who call me... Tim?"
