[quote="StarWarrior"]Wait how are these names:

Jinto "Sho-chan" Liu
Kyle "Bishoun" Takashi
Kaen "Shounwaii" Takashi
Kashoun "Sho-chan" Waiien

quote]

just a note, because it hasen't been mentioned yet.. strait guys USUALY don't call other strait boys Chan. there could be situations where they would, .one might call a young boy (under 12ish) chan.. there may be some others i'm really not sure...just though i'd warn you ..in case that wasn't your intention.
kun would be a more common name sufix for a guy

um okay. i guess that it can be alternated if i want to. but for the sake of simplisity, maybe we should cancel that one. with the Sho-chan.

Oh yeah remember i said you could mix them up. so if you don't like sho-chan/kun, just keep it out when you mix them up! just to clarify everything.

-_- Hrm. This is kind of a toughie...

Well, what I used to do was to think in combinations of letters, as each Japanese symbol, be it katakana or Hirigana, is a combintion of a consonant and a vowel. I would take the letters and smush them together until I got a cool name.
Another method is to take pre-existing words and modify them. If you're really desperate, flip through a dictionary or a good book with your eyes closed and put your finger on a word, then tweak that word (or words surrounding it) into a name.

Or, if all else fails, keep your character's name ambiguous until you can think of a good name for him/her. You can use the character for several strips without ever using their name (I've done it once or twice... *coughs* but anyway...).
Or to really screw with readers, do something like...

"There are some who call me... Tim?"

You know what, that's not a bad suggestion. Only if I knew how to read Japanese and had a Japanese dictionary! Same goes for Chinese for my own reasons. But hopefully by the time I put this character in my comic, I'll have decided on a name. Anything else there?

Good point, but straight guys don't usually call their friends "cute boy" either. Hmmm.... it might just be easier to figure out a cute sounding name.

To follow Uber's suggestion, you could try one of the online translator programs, and just feed it words until you find something that strikes you as something you'd like to make a name from. You can find the translators from a search on most search engines. *shrug*

GRRR! This is not working. Lets start over. Forget most of what I said by means of what I want his name to mean. Just think of a name I can use, and I'll go look at those translators. I've already started changing some ideas towards him anyway. grrrr. I need to think of something! :bangs head against many objects: Right after I get over this concusion. THUD!

Concussion bad..... It makes it much harder to name characters when you've bruised your brain. *Offers StarWarrior a cup of green tea* I'll pull up some translators this afternoon, and see if I hit anything cool too.

Okay, i've tried to use some translators, but all the ones i've looked at are trying to turn words written in english to have it written in japanese scripture or whatever it is. so has anyone got a good sugestion of a translator?

you can download NJStar off the net for free and when you type it shows japanese characters... then i just copy paste onto a translator and it works... there is probably an easier way but meh. You could just get a japanese dictionary, funbie those things they are.

Gah. I like to cheat. Here's two more methods to do so:

1. Look up common Japanese names or steal one from the end of an anime (one of the artists or something)

2. Look up baby names. You can get them in ANY language. I suggest running a search on Google for "Baby names"

ORRRR.... You could just break the fourth wall, and when the character is asked what his name is, he can look at the audience and say "The author hasn't decided one yet." Not only does it make your life easier, but you can use that as a running gag until you can figure out what to name the character!
