Forum Banners
Hm... Not sure where to post this... Anyway...
I'd like to get a banner up in my sig. But I've heard that taking it from your FTP generates a truckload unwanted hits.
So, my question is, where are you guys uploading your banners to?

I'm guessing it's from my main (personal) domain, though - i.e. somewhere non-commie related. which is probably illegal, but I'm not very good at the whole internet shebang.

Just to clarify: not only will it generate unwanted hits, but it'll also never work since its hotlinking.Black_Sparrow wrote:Hm... Not sure where to post this... Anyway...

(EDIT well, I guess you could get around that by putting the image in a folder other than /images/, but then you still have to deal with the first problem)
As for where to host it... well, one place is the guide:

imageshack too, for the win!
If you want to do this "in-system", and avoid relying on an external site which might crash or go out of business, you have to do a little work. If you already know some of these steps, I apologize.
Make sure your banner file is one of the three 'official' sizes: 88x31 pixels, 200x40, or 468x60.
Using FTP, upload the file to your comic's images directory under workspace.
on the WWW, log in at
http://siteadmin.comicgenesis.com:8080/
give your official Comic Genesis name and password, and then run a Manual Update. If a lot of people are ahead of you in the queue, you'll have to wait a while for it to be processed. Alternately, you can wait for your comic to hit its automatic update time.
FTP: whichever method you use, make sure that the banner file has moved to "images" under your public_html folder.
siteadmin: back on the main page, click on the 'edit banner' link. You'll get a box where you can type in the address for your banner: /public_html/images/bannername.gif. (or .jpg or .whatever..)
Do not add "www." or anything else. Be sure and get this exactly right or the system will spit back a snotty error message. If/when it works, you'll be rewarded with a short report detailing the new banner's info (height, width, etc) including a number called the "Banner ID". If you can't actually see the new banner, however, it hasn't made its way entirely through the system. Again, you'll have to wait awhile, and check back. When you can actually see the banner included with the report, note the ID number, and create an address like this:
http://guide.comicgenesis.com/images/banners/####.gif
"####" being the Banner ID number. If you put this address directly into your browser, the banner image should pop up, and you can also paste it into your Forums signature.
You can add banners in all three sizes if you want, along with a 150x300 file for the "newshack" advertising box. If you put in a 468x60 banner, it will automatically appear above your comic description over at the Guide. (Note the address you're using..)
I did all of this several months ago. Strangely, at some later point my banner got purged from my official siteadmin page, but it still works here in the forums.
