New front page design contest (Ends Aug 5th!!!)
Hmm... Out of what is up so far, I actually still prefer Merc's design. Joel's is getting increasingly nicer (I really like the background-integrated Gen-chan as well), but the colors are still pretty clashing. Violet and yellow together are a big no-no in my book - how about making the glow white and replacing the violet-ish background colors with truly blue, or even blue-grey, ones? (like the coloring on the Gen-chan picture)

) is the guide link (or something similar in Joel's case) on the top of the page - this was something that really bothered me about the old page, so I'm glad it might become different.

Um... It is blue. I just double checked in Photoshop. It's pure. And yellow and blue usually go together well.Ida wrote:Violet and yellow together are a big no-no in my book - how about making the glow white and replacing the violet-ish background colors with truly blue
Edit: Nevermind. I see what you mean now.
Which means I'm not sure how to take that.
I guess I'll see if anyone else comments...
Actually, I pretty much expect I'll have to remove them. They're far from critical, though.STrRedWolf wrote:I can see putting GenChan in a Div layer that floats over things. We can use GIF for the transparent GenChan and PNG's for the shadows.

Since Gen-chan seems to make the design a little complicated, perhaps it shouldn't be a part of the design. Then again, I'm not too keen on the gen-chan idea, so I'm probably speaking for myself here.

I'm still working on it.
I think I've got the mission statement/intro/whatever it is down, my only problem is there's something wrong with the table for the newsbox and genre map. In IE, it retracts both the iframe and Keenspot blurb up onto the same line... only it essentially disappears. I sure as hell can't find the problem, but if someone could look it over and maybe spot an obvious error I've overlooked. I'll still tweak around with it, see if I can figure it out.
Other than that, comments or suggestions?

I think Gen-chan adds a lot but the way I've done it may be too complex given what Kisai wants the webpage to be able to do. Mercury Hat's current one looks almost as good, doesn't look like it's try hard to be cool and stylish and is much, much simpler. I might try a version like that. Bigger window and Gen-chan off to the side. The Neko wrote:Since Gen-chan seems to make the design a little complicated, perhaps it shouldn't be a part of the design. They don't have to. You can set up a GIF to look good on whatever background you like - it's just you can't change the background without changing the GIF as well. The Neko wrote:The problem with gifs is that they look like shit on dark backgrounds, png-24 works best but...
(Check out my avatar on a darker forum skin for an example.)
Mostly tweaks...Mercury Hat wrote:Other than that, comments or suggestions?
I'd take out the text under Gen-chan. It's not an illustration that needs a caption - it's a graphic. Part of the site, in a way. I'd also put the comic links next to her, possibly after a short blurb. Those are what people go to the site for and what we'd want them to see.
I'd also get rid of the green box next to the Keenspot logo - it's a different design to the site and looks off - and change the red links at the bottom so they're readable.
It's ultimately up to the admins, but I don't actually see any point to a "Reset" button on a one-field form. Most searches don't bother.
"Logo design by Joel Fagin -- Site design by Mercury Hat" is currently right underneath the Keenspot address and in the Keenspot-green area, yet it's nothing to do with the address or Keenspot. It'd work in the black bar at the bottom, though, since that is about Cgen and the site.
Finally, I would tend to avoid the use of the word "Guide". Well, actually, I have avoided it, but the reasoning is that it doesn't really explain exactly what it is. It's a list of the comics, rather than a guide to them. I definitly prefer an actual instruction/invitation such as "Browse all comics". It's just clearer.
Apart from that, the layout's working really well.

Okay, I did some of the tweaks Joel suggested and came up with this here.
I'd like to keep the green box with the Keenspot info as a sort of a throwback to Pin's design. Right now I can't think of what to change "Guide" to and I figure since I say it's a comprehensive list of all comics, it's got enough explanation. I might make a new "Browse all comics" button, but as it is, I think I'm done for the night.

Version 4
Tweaked the layout. Bigger logo (important for higher resolutions), bigger main window with more room (enough for six pogs in two rows in 800x600 mode, which is what this was designed in), and a simpler Gen-chan position which is still overlapping elements so still retains the original feel.

Looks like we have an entry for a rotating GenChan: http://www.livejournal.com/users/digitalwar/14552.html

The text isn't glowing. It just has a slight inside stroke which implies glowing without actual glow. The Neko wrote:I don't mind the glowing logo, but I think that's all that should be glowing.
I tried it plain white. The atom logo overshadowed it. If others agree, though, I can pitch it as an option.
I think a rotating Gen-chan would be most fun but we have an option on comic characters like Spot does as well, or just the one picture, or anything else anyone can think of.Are we going to have a rotating gen-chan or is that the official one?
However, none of that's urgent. We can get the site up and worry about that a month later without a problem.
Ah-ha. There's an advantage of Mercury's design. You can fit nearly any picture in there. Mine's a bit more restrictive on that front.STrRedWolf wrote:Looks like we have an entry for a rotating GenChan: http://www.livejournal.com/users/digitalwar/14552.html
So, no, I'm not sure if War's will fit. I'd need a version without a background to check.

Nooo, I meant the file-folder things below it. They shouldn't have that fuzzy glow.Joel Fagin wrote:The text isn't glowing. It just has a slight inside stroke which implies glowing without actual glow. The Neko wrote:I don't mind the glowing logo, but I think that's all that should be glowing.

It'd be awesome to take submissions of "Gen" pictures with the option of those pictures being a character from the given artist's comic dressed as her. Perhaps that would be too limiting, if we are comparing it to KeenSpot's site, where the restriction seems to be the character is shouting "KeenSpot". However, since there are going to be "pogs", I don't see why it can't be a little restrictive for the avatar.Joel Fagin wrote:I think a rotating Gen-chan would be most fun but we have an option on comic characters like Spot does as well, or just the one picture, or anything else anyone can think of.Are we going to have a rotating gen-chan or is that the official one?
I definitely like your design better so far, Joel, but it seems both the designs are starting to get a bit overworked. For example, I liked Merc's first design better than her current one.
Much better! The colors in this version are very nice, and the violet thing that annoyed me is gone.Joel Fagin wrote:Version 4

I like the design, but I think that the generes should go before the mission statement. Either that or have a very short brief mission statement on the top (Welcome to Comic Genesis, Free Webcomic Hosting Service and Community etc) and the long one at the bottom.Mercury Hat wrote:I'm still working on it.

But what is the purpose of the main page? To show that there are categories of comics or to try to pry a new reader into the fold?
Chances are that someone who knows of Keenspace probably doesn't hit the main page all that often.
I think the main page should draw (pardon the pun) a reader in.
Also, some comics are not easily catagorized...

That's why we have Pogs. We just don't know what they'll look like yet so we can't add them.TeenIdol wrote:But what is the purpose of the main page? To show that there are categories of comics or to try to pry a new reader into the fold?
Well, all my old ones are still online, and it's basically in case people want, say, the latest colour scheme but the first layout.wp wrote:I agree. Both designs are starting to get really bloated looking.Risky wrote:Iit seems both the designs are starting to get a bit overworked.
