Mystery Comic Theater 3000

Post by Rosenborg »

So there's this little idea we've had. Considering there are about a billion webcomics out there, this has probably been done before. But I haven't seen it yet.

There used to be a TV series called Mystery Science Theater 3000 (info on IMDB, info on TV Tome) in which a guy was trapped in space and was forced to watch bad scifi movies. The show was basically the sillouette of the guy and two robots in a movie theater watching the movie and commenting on it. It's pretty funny.

So we had this idea, to do the same thing with webcomics, in which our characters sit down and comment on a webcomic strip, silouetted in a movie theater. It would be one of our main characters and a cynical cat and dog:

And for this we need people who are willing to let us use their strips.

Yes, we'd make fun of the drawing and the story, but not in a way that would put the comic or the creator down ! This just may prove to be impossible, but let's give it a try. Before putting the strip online, we'd make sure the artist is completely okay with our comments and remarks. If they're not, the thing doesn't go online. If they change their mind after it's been put up, it's taken down again. We would try to refrain from comments that would offend the creator, but instead focus on harmless elements the creator is okay with: "Haha, it's true I can't draw feet!"

By commenting on a strip we'd not want to imply any feelings of superiority over that strip. If you like, you can do the same thing with our comic (just ask us first).

Like I said, this might have been done before, and this might prove to be impossible. Who wants to give it a try?

Feel free to use my strips.

Actually drop me a line, because I think I have an idea that will work out pretty friggin well with that concept involving 'zillias.

Nah, go for it. I'm sure you'd find something pretty quickly you could use.

lol I'd say go for mine but there's not much to work with.

Also don't be so stingy on the PC crap. If making fun of the creator is called for do it. Anyone who is so thin skinned as to not be able to handle a few jokes is asking to be made fun of. =]

well I think he's got every right to be a little nervous. as the thin skinned people are also the most vocal and will get all mad and stuff, and who wants that?

On a side note, doing a wierd Al approach to this might work. That is ask the people you want to make fun of Via e-mail before hand. that way if they don't want to be made fun of they can tell you no.

This is a great idea. I like it. Feel free to mock me (or, preferably, my comic).

Great! Didn't expect so many positive responses. We'll be going through your all's archives in the next weeks and get back to you with first drafts. Thanks everyone!

That is a totally kick ASS idea. Once OTC gets going I want you to insult away. Please feel free to make fun of me as much as possible.

Thanks again! Of course the comic doesn't have to be on Keenspace. We should get around to doing MCT3K-Strips in a couple of weeks. So if you don't hear from us for a while, it's not like we've forgotten you, it's just that these things take time.

Heck, yeah! Feel free to mess around with what I've got up so far. I'd feel better if you attacked what I was good at (my drawing skills are definitely sub-par, so feel free to crack gags at my dialogue/etc, or draw strange references from my currently ever-changing style).
Magius out.
