You've all most likly seen this already, but I thought I'd post about it anyway so I'd have a cheap excuse to put a link to my site on the board again...
Something Awful.com has put up a guide on "How to make your own damn web comic". I thought I'd mention it for all those future keenspacers who have been going though all the sites, thinking "Hey, I could do that, How hard can it be to cut and paste the same image over and over again and make a fart joke with it?" and want to start their own strips...
Yep, just trying to do my part... that's all one man can hope to do-_-

I remember reading that... I respect anyone that pokes fun at what the "popular" comics on the internet are. "Gaming", "Geeks", and so forth... I say "to HELL with them!" But no one cares.

It's nice to see comics that aren't entirely based on relationships or computer geeks. It's also nice to see that most of the keenspacers are comletely different from that.

You make a good point there. In fact, when I look around at other keenspace comics, man were weird! And Im proud to be part of the weirdness!

Personally, I'm mad because Something Awful took my whole format and made a joke about it. At least I know that my strip beat out the parody or I'd've been copying it. Ouch!
------------------

Personally, I found the article hilarious. Those of you who cannot laugh at it (not that this applies to those who have posted, necessarily) need to wake up a bit. If you are going to publish anything, anywhere, you are going to have people criticizing you, mocking you, parodying you, and even going so far as to say that the stuff you publish is complete dross, and of negative worth to the human species. It comes with the territory. But if you are any good, you'll weather the critique, and start hearing from the people who really, really like what you do.

Just because a format has been maligned or "overdone" doesn't mean you can't carve a space there for yourself. In the middle of the century the "chase" cartoon was all the rage, and Warner Brothers set out to mock that rage with the "Roadrunner and Coyote" series. Their mockery was so successful that they ended up as a new standard for the genre--a genre in which nobody thought there was room at the top. And then, with "The Simpsons" Matt Groenig introduced "Itchy and Scratchy" which took the genre one step further, and which still elicits laughs all over.
------------------

I really need to put more "::laughs::" in there, don't I? I'm sorry. I was afraid that I might overuse them. Do you guys know how to do sarcasm better? ::sheepish:: Let me be completely clear this time. I though it was right funny that a lot of their definitions of crap (what they were making fun of) werre basically found within my comic strip. Not that it is funny because it doesn't make sense. It is funny because it is so true. A lot of stuff I've done is the easy way out in terms of characterization, for instance, I chose (more or less) the wacky male lead because I am male and it is easier for me to describe dialogue. I also chose to do a giant tag for my strip (albeit not as large as "somethingawful's") on the grounds that extra big=extra visible=extra good. etc., etc. I was just joking when I declared myself to be "mad." Next time I'll try to be more clear about my sarcasm. You (meaning anyone) try to tell me when I'm too overt. I apologize for hitting Howard's nerve there. Whooboy! You got quite mad at me!

quote:
Originally posted by Howard:

Screwball McGoo,

Let me clarify--I wasn't upset at you, or even raising my voice. Or even pointing at your post (it's unfortunate mine came right after yours). It's just this know-it-all tone I tend to take when I write. I sound like some holier-than-thou, brow-beating, fascist sometimes, and I really don't mean to. I'm a nice guy, really.

No, really. Trust me ;-)
------------------

You have no idea how tempting it is to cut & paste panels sometimes....
It might just be me, or it might have something to do with this being a computer age.
But I digress. I found the comic funny and insightful. And yes, I realized that I have a wacky male lead. That didn't disturb me.
What disturbed me was how well they got Illiad's drawing style down.
Hmm... fuzzy psychopathic mascot....
Nah, Dana'd get jealous. She's the cute megalomaniac of the strip....
-C. Glen Williams

Too many late-night sessions of hilarity take their toll. I am the pumpkin king.
