I was told that I have to read the book as penance for seeing the movie. I thought that my penance would have to be a personal apology to every person on Earth, so I'm excited to get my hands on the book.------------------

I saw the movie too.If I said there was nothing else on, I'd be lying. Actually, it was highly recommended to me by a person who deserves to be beaten about the head and shoulders with a white-hot seven-iron.Anyway, the ONLY good things I can say about the movie are:(1) It wasn't longer.
(2) The shower scene, once muted, at least appealed to my baser nature. And frankly, that's the only appeal whatsoever. If they had made the entire movie just that two-minute shower scene, cut the dialogue, and replaced the so-called actors, I might recommend it to my perverted friends.Barring that, the movie is an amazing waste of special-effects budgets.--Strange------------------

At least it was better than Titanic!My recommendation is to watch the DVD with the director's commentary track turned on. You'll laugh your self silly. These guys thought they were making a film that made serious and important commentary on American culture, society, and foreign policy. Blah blah blah, war bad, blah b-blah, we no like war, blah, we smart, make movie. They should have taken all those special FX bucks and given them to charity, they would have come closer to their altruistic goals.
They were trying to make something allegorical a la Wizard of Oz, and ended up making clumsy farce that was more like a pile of monkey puss. (I thought the brain slugs looked neat, though. And the attempt at presenting the whole story as an intergalactic recruitment film was noble if poorly exicuted...)At one point they say they were trying to make a point about female sexuality and beauty standards. The thing that never occurs to these geniuses is that their "point" is obliterated by the fact that the cast was selected entirely for the fact that they look good. With the exception of Ironsides and that Busse kid, everyone in the film has sex appeal, and none of them except that Doogie Howser kid can act!Gyaaaa!By the way, don't waste your time on The Cell or The Thirteenth Floor either. It's Like Billy Madison...An...entertaining film, but not agood one...The only thing that was said that was half-witted exceptional, applys here...After Billy gives a terrible explanation of the Industrial Revolution, the teacher stares at him for along time bofore speaking...Pardon my paraphrasing:"In all my years of teaching that is the worst explaination [movie] I have ever heard. Not only have you wasted our time, but you have made everyone in here dumber by that fact. If it were possible, I would kill you a dozen times for the time and energy that you have drained from my life. You fail, and may god help us all."There's a reason why Trainspotting is my favorite film. You'll be squirming in your seat, but at least you're squirming for the right reasons.-glych------------------

Simon: As for my bedtime, I've been getting to bed -- and even falling asleep, I must add -- but now I wake up at 1:30 (like clockwork) and can't fall back asleep for many hours.

Glych: I can't pardon the paraphrasing. It ended with "I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

Oh, and God is love, love is blind, and blinds are Venetian.

And Billy Madison also had a couple other lines I consider classic: "I thought I was your snack pack," "What a weirdo," and whatever the clown says after he gets up with his bloody head in the big final song. Oh my giggly moogles.
Chuck: We did watch some of the director's commentary. I think "we smart, make movie," was an exact quote. I recall Paul Verhoeven saying "hyperbowl" instead of "hyperbole" and "heartaich" rather than "heartache." Hooked on phonics -- pa-hawn-ix -- worked for him!------------------

Anyone who is up posting embarrassing admissions of gottage at 3:00 am deserves my sympathy. I'm sowwy, Wandy. I was being bad.Ayn Rand was Russian-born, and the only reason I knew from an early age that she pronounced her first name with a long "I" sound, rhyming with "shine," is because Paul Simon mentioned her in an old album cut which I think was called "A Certain Desultory Phillipic," with the following line:"I've been Ayn Rand-ed; nearly branded a Communist, 'cause I'm left-handed--
That's the hand they use...well, never mind."
