yes, last minute, while she may have been attracted to him throughout thye movie (i saw it more as he was someone who she turned to for help), there was no indication of love until she tossed it out there at the end[geoduck] wrote:Last minute? I'd say that it'd be different enough to start up a seperate thread, but then you might as well just have the only selection be OTHER since there'd be such a wide variance of opinion, as you said Spirited Away (which was ruined for me largely by the girl randomly falling in love with the spirit seemingly at the last moment)
I haven't seen enough Japanese movies to have a favorite, although I always enjoy watching The Big Green Guy do the Tokyo Two-Step.
Favorite [live action] Japanese movie?

Well, almost exactly at the scene 3/4 of the time in the movie, Spirited Away practically tells you they're in love. (In fact, old "spiderman" says it.) And that is a good place to inform the viewers concretely that they're in love, I'd say.
As for the movie, itself, I think it's good, but Miyazaki/Ghibli has made far better than that, too. For example, Nausica

Not using Keenspace, I just am here. For some reason. Probably because I'm making a webcomic. Yeah.
Really though, the movie shouldn't have had to drop that on you like that. It should have been evident from their relationship. It just seemed like they bumped it up out of nowhere... the spider guy saying "love is a powerful thing" or however he put it, was a bit forced... I still liked it though.Guyara wrote:Well, almost exactly at the scene 3/4 of the time in the movie, Spirited Away practically tells you they're in love. (In fact, old "spiderman" says it.) You really had to spoil that, didn't you??Guyara wrote:When it comes to Battle Royale, I didn't really like it.There wasn't much story in it. Just a bunch of school kids killing each other off, and then, when three remain, they kill the government guys, or whatever they are. Then, they escape on a boat, where one of the three dies. And then, the guy and the girl left are fugitives for the rest of their lives...

Nah, it was there from the beginning, but it was a simple childlike love. It wasn't based on physical attraction or a meshing of personalities, it was that he helped her, and she wanted to help back. She also felt she knew him from somewhere: He was familiar and comforting. For a kid, that's enough. You doubt it? Look how she reacts when he begins acting cold to her. The concern she had when she found him in trouble. How she gives him the magic pill instead of using it on her parents. If this doesn't seem plausible to you, ah well. Still a damn good movie though.brockway wrote:Really though, the movie shouldn't have had to drop that on you like that. It should have been evident from their relationship. I loved the movie, its just that the love part seemed weird. I got the innocent affection thing, it just seemed like it got pushed way past there near the end.yeahduff wrote:Nah, it was there from the beginning, but it was a simple childlike love. It is actually. My cohort Dehn (see comic) is absolutely obsessed with it. I can't say I'm that amazed by it but then again for him if it's Japanese it already 10 gajillion points in his book. (ahhh I remember when I was like that)sippan wrote:I've heard that After Life is supposed to be one of the best movies ever, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere... Has anyone seen it? The Fan: Action, Drama, Suspence...All at a comfortable room temperature. Yeah, it's still there. I'm as shocked as you are.

Well now that someone mentioned Beat Takeshi I'm gonna have to put that in its own category and say either "Mina Yateru Ka? (Gettin' Any?)" or "Kikujiro (....ummm Kikujiro". Both are very good yet completely different styles of movies.
