I believe that question will be replied in the storyline in a far, far, very far future.
Still, that is a major curiosity of mine too, and there are many many other questions that I have and that I feel I won't have the opportunity to bring up anytime soon.

I'd say that there may be unevolved versions of some of the species and/or creatures not unlike the tokag

A lot of GeneCat's readers have NO interest or background ion the Furries game/mud, whatever - but read him because he has said MORE than any commercial comic except maybe Doonsbury, Boondocks and Non-Sequitor in the past year about us HUMANS:
QUESTION:
What turned (all/part) of non-human races into sentient beings?
If "all" how do carnivores survive?

That question will be answered in the story.
Indeed, the chain of events that will lead up
to the answer are being set in motion right
now in the comic.

They say at apes are sentient because they can identify their mirror images. What test can use for specie, whom main sense are smell or hearing?

The problem with any such test is: who gets
to decide what the results mean?

Well, I do have some strict guidelines. But
there's no official RPG that my comic is
based upon.
