Server crash?

Post by Taiwanimation »

Yesterday I was updating manually, and the queue never moved for hours (this was approx 4-10 PM Pacific time). This morning, at 7:20 AM Pacific, my site won't load at all, nor will anyone else's. The forum threads are filled with red x's where banners once were.

Yep, same here. I went for a manual update around 5am yesterday, and AutoKeen dutifully reported I was already in the update queue. That alone told me something was amiss, since I KNOW I'm usually out of the queue by 1:30am for my midnight update time...

Later, I noticed the queue hadn't moved. Then the site stopped loading. Then FTP stopped working. Explosions EVERYWHERE!

Any ETA on the server repair, KeenSpace folk?

Explosions indeed ^^;;; My site is completely inaccessible (0 hits for the last 24 hours or so) and ftp won't work. Is all this due to the fact that Keenspace is moving everyone to a new server?

If that's the case then...is there a giant Keenspace mailing list or announcement board (other than the forums--cuz sometimes they're inaccessible too) in which Keenspace administrators can post big news/changes? That way we have a bit more warning when something Keen related is being reworked. Then we can warn readers in advance of any problems they might have accessing the site.

And yes, ETA would be nice ^^;;;

Actually, yes... the Keenspace-Admin group on Yahoo is where all the important stuff is reported. Most of the time. No word about this yet.

And if you happen to have a LiveJournal account, the Keenspace folk also watch and post to the Keenspace community. Also useful.

Though sometimes we don't get warning on those ahead of time, either...

One thing I can do is to point out that my mirror site at mirror site and my Keenprime site under development are, for the time being, at least, functional, and recommend that ROCR readers subscribe to Modern Tales whose business model allows it to be a much more reliable provider of comics for Internet users than Keenspace or Keenspot can ever hope to be

Well, the sververs are back up...

And, all of my the files in my Public/Comic direcroty are deleted, along with all of the fiels in my workspace files. And, I mean every file, including folders. Also, I can't create new folders to take the place of the old ones, as well as I can't put files into it.

Er... sure it's back up? I'm getting Connection Refused errors when I try to hit my comic. And the site maintenence tools seem to be giving me 403s...

I dunno, I say we wait until something gets done. Or we get impatient and form a good old-fashioned torch-and-pitchfork mob and storm Castle Keenspace. :-)

All right, all of my files are back (even though wednesday's update is still in the comic directory under Workspace)

But, the members area is not up, so I can't manually get the next comic up, nor can I check my logs...

And here I was looking forward to a good ole mutiny and lynch mob...but my site's back up (including ftp) ^^. Tho it's as slow as a slug on crack...

Thanx for the heads up on the Yahoo Group, SpaceCadet, tho I think I tried to access it when I first joined Keenspace, and it wouldn't let me in. But I'll try again, maybe I'll have better luck.

And completely off topic, here's my new banner (if it doesn't show up that means my site isn't working again -- hope that doesn't happen x_x)

Now, the site maintainence is showing the php coding for it, rather then the HTML file...

SpaceCadet? :-)

And now it seems the sites are completely down. This time with a message. Ah, well.

Keenspace Server Problems

Keenspace is currently undergoing major server problems. We are working on the problems and hope to have them resolved shortly.

Unfortunately, this is a serious problem (you might have noticed). We are going to move keenspace to a new server tonight (1/23/2003) and will hopefully have it back on line sometime tomorrow.

Thanks,
The Keenspace Staff
In the meantime, I'm moving all of Keenspace to a server on the West Coast
and the move should be finished by about 3PM PST Friday if all goes well.
servermoves practically create hundreds of new bugs simply by existing. And with all the sites down to be moved it could take a while. However, as Nate points out we should all worship Kisai for his work on coding the much more effecient keenspace system. :) The one thing we should remember is not to get upset if we can access our stuff and some of it's funky/corrupted/nonexistant. For the most part it should just be part of the servermove, and the admin's really wouldn't intentionally delete our comics. Even ones as badly written as mine...
