Ah, yes, Pennywise. Then, of course, there's the Joker, the Violator, the Crow, the Showman, the clown doll from Poltergeist, real-life serial killer/torturer/rapist John Wayne Gacy Jr... why does it always come down to an evil clown?

Because all clowns are inherently evil, didn't you know that?
Listen carefully, there is little time. Clowns are not scary, they are a menace. Fear the clowns! Fear Nov. 28th! The clowns will- NO! NO GET AWAY!!! STAY AWAY FROM M- AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK!
Mainly because I was part of the clown/mime team at church.
Anyways, that clown just made a FATAL mistake. NEVER tell anyone they're dreaming, because when you do, that is a DEAD giveaway that they're NOT dreaming! ("Total Recall", anyone?)
In your dreams, the only one who can possibly know you're dreaming is yourself (and then many times only after you wake up you realise you were dreaming), and if by any chance you do realise you're dreaming WHILE you're dreaming, everyone in your dream is subject to your will and can't possibly know you're dreaming, and if you tell them they won't believe you unless you will them to.
So Ben's possibly right now under the influence of a suble hallucinogenic substance, and the clown is making him THINK he's dreaming. If Ben still has his gun, he should try what Schwartzenneger did in that movie: "If I shoot you, nothing should happen to you".
Not to mention the Posse could help him with reality as well...
J.P. Patches was a good clown, but we don't see him around any more. I think the bad clowns have kidnapped him.
If this was a dream, taken over by the clown, the "toughs" would have disappeared. If it wasn't a dream, they'd likely be trying to help Ben. I'm guessing this is a dream of some sort, but under the clown's control. I'm wondering how many minds the clown can control all at one time though? Ben is kind of a "split personality" after all.
Beyond that, what terrible failures can Ben have had in his life? He has a steady job, a girl who thinks the world of him, and friends. His boss trusts him, too. Not an altogether bad life.
At least he's not busting his hump trying to make a living making online comic strips for us ungrateful readers, like his creator! Professional janitors get pretty good pay, too.
To speak from a theological standpoint, the clown could be an evil spirit of some kind (e.g. hobgoblin, demon, fallen angel, etc.). That would explain why it's supposedly in control of his dream, as well as why it's being so cruel to him. Whatever it is, it's evil, and it sure doesn't have Ben's best interests in mind.
Makes me wonder if Ralph's going to implement some spiritual warfare into the plot. Granted, not everyone is going to like it, but it's his comic. However this ends, I'm definitely gonna be there.
Just my two cents on dreams: If you realize you are dreaming, that's because you are awake. It has something to do with the way dreams work. Granted, nobody knows everything about dreams, but we do know that certain parts of the brain are active at certain parts of the night, especially the ones that are active when you enter "REM" sleep (the portion containing dreams) Interestingly, that tends to be the last few minutes of sleep. Makes me wonder wheter it's intended to jump start the old intellect or something... Anyhow, I seem to recall that some parts of the brain that are active when you are awake are less so when you are dreaming. I suspect that realizing you are dreaming occurs when those parts go active. Just a guess. I have noticed before though, that the realization that something is "just a dream" nearly always occurs just before I wake up. Anybody else notice that?

Not necessarily true. There is, of course, lucid dreaming. It's entirely possible to realize you're dreaming while you're dreaming. At which point, as someone else said, the dream comes under your complete control. I've never had this happen to me, but it would be darn neat...
