Plug & stupid question

Post by Gothboy »

Hi, my comic's been running for a couple of months, but I never really checked out these forums before. So, two things.

One: look at my comic!!! It's funny and sad and unique and I'm pretty sure it's the only comic on keenspace done in charcoal. Why am I so sure? Because you have to be crazy to do a comic in charcoal. It's a nightmare. (But makes for a nice atmosphere.)

Second: tell me what you think. The comic is threatening to take off into a completely different (and weird) direction and I'm not sure if I should let it. So, em, I guess what I want to know if you think it's a good idea to change from what GothBoy is at the moment to a ... (let's see, how should I put this...) a metaphysical, deeply plotted look into the nature of reality?

I told you it was a stupid question.

I'll check it out if you can tell me why someone who has a kneejerk reaction to goths should do so.

I think it's great that Elf Only Inn characters can break out from their smaller roles and make it in their own strips as top billing...

Okay, me again. I just read a couple dozen comicstrips and I really like it! You worried me for a second saying you did your comic completely in charcoal but as I see now, it gives an original touch to it and frankly fits the theme of the comic very well! (Unlike the time you used colors, but obviously you realized that right away and stopped).

As for taking a different direction with it; I enjoy what you're doing right now. But in the end it's up to you what you do with your comic and if you want to a metaphysical deeply plotted look into the nature of reality, then a metaphysical deeply plotted look into the nature of reality is what you should do! :)

Upon further inspection of Goth Boy I've learned that this has nothing to do with EOI.

I've bookmarked this comic because I like it's cynical look at cynacism.

I don't think you should radically change the comic much. I don't have a qualms this comic, really. I would tell you if I did.

Notice nobody ever uses the phrase "knee-jerk reaction" to describe a positive reflex reaction to certain stimuli?

For instance: "I have this totally knee-jerk reaction to puppies. I mean, I just have to snuggle them! It doesn't matter what kind of puppies, I just love them all!"
Of course, I'm the one that isn't JP Sloan or Jim North.

Heehee! Hey, this is pretty good. I agree, the charcoal really adds flare to it. It reminds me a bit of some animated shorts I've seen done on glass. It's got that vagueness about it. Very nice!

I like this comic. Definitely.

Except the stuff where you seem to be suggesting that Buffy is totally a goth thing, because it isn't. Of course, I could just be totally misinterpreting what you say, but whatever.
Ricci probably thinks Buffy is funny because it is funny. But also deadly serious.

Anyway, getting away from my rabid Buffy fandom, I think you should change over to the whole "metaphysical, deeply plotted look into the nature of reality?" if that's what you want to do. Don't do stuff just to please other people, just do what you want to do.

It's nah bad. I don't know how you kept from getting charcoal everywhere. Me+ charcoal = Mcsootiness You could let it evolve since you've already laid some ground work with characters, but they aren't so defined that you couldn't work in some of the weirdness of a new direction. I think there's room in there since although there is a end-of-strip/punchline feel, that doesn't mean you can't take it deeper, (ah-yeah, what up, takin' it to another level yo!).

I'm curious... have you ever actually met a real goth, or do you just judge them based on the stereotype?

Somehow I imagine when I see a shaven headed fellow with 3d glasses on and a metal ring in their nose that they're familiar with goths, but that's just me.

You would think so, wouldn't you? Maybe all of the stereotypical "oh, I'm so tortured" goths hang out in his area...

They do indeed. It's a mixed bag here. Hell, I bet they even bump elbows occasionally with the arrogant, arty, posteuring intellectual posers that like to carry their mocking *tsks* and aloof "seen-it-all" attitudes around on their shoulder.. maybe..

I like it! Keep it funny. I think the form you're using is much better for humor than a metaphysical look at reality.

Yup! I like how it is now. I think it might lose its edge if it turned more metaphysical. As it is now, the comic has a lot of personality.

wow! doesn't using charcoal get expensive, or do you just randomly chop and burn down trees? :D

seroiusly though, i can go through a couple inches of a stick of charcoal on one a4 sized drawing.

granted i shade a lot more, but still, charcoal runs out quickly!

and can i poke you with my spoon and say that my only whinge with the page is that the black text sometimes doesn't show up over your black squiggle bg? too late. said it anyway. have some icecream :D

i have a rant about "goths", but i'll leave it alone.

edit: it's late and ihave to get up at 6am tomorrow/today >.<
use a spoon! it hurts more!
