I thought the spleen did something with sugar, but now that I think about it, that's the pancreas.
You need a spleen to filter out old blood cells.

GB Shaw did wonders with the nuciform sac -- it was a running gag in the Doctor's Dilemma. It may not exist, but it does pre-date the flashback.
