That is an, ah, extraordinary outfit for Ms. Ambrose!

Florence and Jenny have much in common, but they are definitely from different universes. I keep abreast of these developments, you know. ;)

Nevertheless -- a very fetching canine indeed!

Well, you triggered it:

Mean Mister Starfall lives on a ship
He's in a strip with his two co-stars.
Keeps in a hole with his debt
Thinks he'll get away with it yet
Does he think that Flo is his pet?
Such a mean con man...

His engineer works on the ship
Plans all the trips, she's a go-getter.
Takes his debts and con games, and smiles
Careful of his title and wiles
He prefers the scavenger's styles
Such an alien man
Alien man...

Helix the Bot helps out a lot
Not deep of thought -- for him life's simple:
"Pick it up, move it, put it down."
Always up for trips to the town.
Alternates 'tween straight man and clown
Such a funny device
Is he secretly wise?

. . .

Well you should see Florence Ambrose!
At engineering she ranks up with the pros.
Although the look she likes best, Sam calls "a dog in a dress"
Still you should see Florence Ambrose!
Yeah, yeah, yeah (woof woof woof woof)

Get a dose of her in her shipboard dress
She gets it right though she thinks color's a mess
She's the kind of a wolf that transcends dog-human gulf
And she's the favorite of the fans that confess.
Yeah, yeah, yeah (woof woof woof woof)

Whole lotta Flo'...

Post by ZOMBIE USER 8613 »

Right on, man. <snapping fingers> I could see you in a diggity dank poets' den at the mike with that one and a quick, light jazz beat behind you somewhere to put a frame around it. (What a gas...)

(To be honest, I pictured Florence as a grey wolf. But then, I haven't made it quite through the entire Freefall archive yet either. Too much 3D life to take care of in between. <sigh>)

I hope you know the tune that I corrupted... otherwise, the rhythm scheme will seem strange indeed.

The earliest colored strips portrayed her as brown, with light grey or white chest fur. That has become the standard now. In the jaunt I just took, "Freefall in Color Volume II" has some animation that is quite cute. Notice, for example, what happens to Florence's biomonitor collar when Winston tries to take her coffee away:
http://4096k.net/DesertWlf/strips/fv00421c_finished.gif

She is a genetically engineered "Bowman's wolf" -- and if you search for this term on the Internet, 100% of the hits will be references to Florence Ambrose, or the names of greyhounds and showdogs named in her honor. So, it is reasonable to assume that all 14 of the Bowman's wolf examples that Florence has referred to are brown.

Certain late contributors to the color process have decided that Helix is cyan, rather than the battleship grey he'd previously sported. That seems wrong to me.

Arg. Wish I could say that I did, but no idea. Usually when I'm reading lyrics and I don't know a tune, I just go with instinct and my head puts one there. Surely you know what I mean. Especially if you've ever read anything from Spider Robinson. <hehe>
LevelHead wrote:The earliest colored strips portrayed her as brown, with light grey or white chest fur. That has become the standard now.
Okay, but like I mentioned, I have yet to read enough of freefall to be caught up. I dunno if I'm even up to a colored strip yet in the archive. (Just looked. I'm only up to #252 right now. Where to spend one's time is always tough, but even tougher because I've been so danged busy lately...)

I love it! This is great. :D Freefall is very rapidly becoming one of my fave strips. Right up there with 21stCF, Mynarski, Doemain, FCoE, K&K, SJ, CM, SSDD... <deep breath>.. Sabrina, Dela, Ufie, Fefine, Lizard, Faux Pas, Funny Farm, GPF, etc... etc...

Now I'll have to look through this 'Color Volume' of which you speak. :

Oho! Well, see if you can obtain the Beatles "Mean Mister Mustard/Polythene Pam". Sometimes the two songs are listed separately, but they are always one piece. The breakpoint is the beginning of "Well you should see..." ;)

I took the liberty of adding one extra "Mean Mister Mustard" verse to keep Helix from being left out.

You have some enjoyable reading ahead! But, go to the main site, and select "Freefall in Color" -- all of the early strips are done, but it gets sporadic for the last couple of hundred. You'll switch back to black and white at that point -- but Jack (and Florence) live with this arrangement.

Technically, canines and vulpinescan see limited colors (or rather, even more limited than humans) ;) -- and one of the Freefall strips had links to excellent resources on the topic.

I will waste more of your time -- in a good cause. You mentioned Sabrina. May I refer you to the most excellent:

Aha! Just played Mean Mr. Mustard. Tres Chic. Hey, I wasn't *too* far off the mark... even that tune could get by in a beatnik haven. <lol>

(I'm glad my Beatles directory has 144 files in it. <heh> I even have the rare-rare Decca tracks, if you're interested. {"Can you say 'Besame Mucho'?"}) (Hey! I have "Sie Leibt Deich" too... an' other stuff. Listening to them now. :D )

Oy! I take two hours just to get caught up on the fave toons folder as it is, since I usually neglect it for several days at a time. Then there's the forum typing. <ahem> Then picking an archive I haven't finished looking through. Then there's deciding whether I should poke my nose into furnet on IRC (which just means I'll be spending all my typing time there, if I do...). I haven't even been to visit FurryMuck in over a month. <sigh>

(Okay, felines *never* whine, but I'm feeling close... <sniffle>)

Numerous replies! :)

The animated GIF of Florence is really neat! I need to figure out how to do animated gifs. Not sure what I'd do with them, but with all the instrument control panels I've been drawing lately, blinking flashing lights would be really cool! :) Gotta figure that out! :)

KOakaKO! Neat list of strips you've got to go through.
Unfortunately, for your time, I see one conspicuously absent:
Gene Catlow! :) Sorry to eat up what's left of your spare time, but this one's good! :)
http://www.genecatlow.com/

And one other favorite too: It's not Furry, but it's one of the best Science Fiction strips on the net: Schlock Mercenary
http://www.schlockmercenary.com/

Cyan Helix?
No, I can't see it. I haven't gone through the color Freefall strips, but... I think Mark Stanley originally had him in grey tones and I can't imagine him any other way. Maybe another of Helix's model type, but not Helix. He'd look like a big M&M...!

(Side note:)
YAY! I finished coloring next week's stuff! Yay! now I can goof off! Whee! :D

Yes. You gotta do that. Right now. :P (I'd like to know how too, but I barely even understand HTML...)

Ummm... nope. :D That one's not absent (here, anyway), I just gave up listing 'toons to save time and effort. <lol> I have Catlow (I *like* Catlow)... and Oren the Otter, Bad Bunny, Dilbert, Foxtrot, Fusion D, WCotP, Jack, Limpidity, Just another Vice, Namir Deiter, Narbonic, Newshounds, Nip and Tuck, Real Life, Roomies, Sheldon, Sluggy, Snail Dust, PLIF....

Heck, there's MORE, even. I think I'll just give it up and save a lot more typing. <LOL>

More Florence art

You'll likely have to cut 'n paste due to Tripod being annoying, but the minor hassle is well worth it:

These are from the Florence & White Pony's Magic Cruise thread on Mark's forum. Recommended read :)

Oho! I like them -- but I confess that the anchoring of that swimsuit, while logical, looks a bit uncomfortable. ;)

Speaking of cameos -- this is the first time I've seen the Freefall forum -- do you know anyone with a late 60's vette that I could cameo, and get a lady spaceship engineer/car enthusiast to drive in a story I am working on? The license plate would change -- to "NASA GAL". You probably know that Corvettes have a long and glorious history in the Astronaut Corps. I would be honored to be allowed to use your car to continue that tradition.

The car will meet its demise during the course of the story -- but not in any dishonorable way. And it will make it to 50 years old -- but not 55.
