Well? Stunning art, immersive storylines, irresistable characterisation, ROFL humour, in-jokes, cunning use of sarcasm/irony, the subject matter? Look down your list of bookmarks and ask yourself, "What keeps me reading these comics every day?"

well, since I read comics where some look wonderful and some look like crap, I'd have to say that I just have to enjoy it, be it the humor or story... it also helps to not have too much angst, there's been times where I've been reading a comic for a long while and just got so sick of all the angst i wanted to puke

basically I go by Art and humour...
stories can be almost incomprehensable, but if the humours good, and the art is of a certain level I'll go along for the ride.

I would say it would have to be the characterizations/humor. If you can get the point across, art doesn't really matter that much to me. I'll read a stickman comic if I find the dialogue humorous.

Basically the humor and just that alone will make me swarm over like flies.

The next likely thing is probably whether they're gonna give me free food or not.

It seems that I wont have to be so worried about my art then! lol.
I would have to agree tho. But to an extent. SOmetimes the Megatokyo story gets too weird, but the art in incredible, and humor can always be found with Largo and Boo!! However, I find Pentasmal absolutely great because of the humor. I even bought a "Stalinfish" hooded sweatshirt!

So I guess that's my rant and froth. Good day all!

I think good art catches my eye first.
If there are pretty boys to stare at then I can accept a bemusing story line.

Humor is next. If a comic is consitantly funny then i'll always pop over to it when I need a good laugh.

Absolutely always the quality of the writing. Nothing else matters.
Of course, I'm the one that isn't JP Sloan or Jim North.

I'd have to say a good plot and half decent art oh yeah...and regular updating! My fave comics aren't really HUMOR comics, but I read 'em anyway cos I want to know what happens. It's one of those things...Stephen King isn't funny but he's addictive. Go figure

Are you seriously suggesing that you don't care about art quality *at all*?
Comics are a visual medium as well as a written one. If you don't care about art, why not just read a novel?

Yeah, look at stuff like Boxjam's Doodle, where the art is barely a step above stick figures. You get just enough lines to tell what the thing is supposed to be, and that's all you need. The writing is what's good about the strips, the jokes, the dialogue, the relationships between the characters, that's why people come back.

Alternatively, hitting upon an old topic, I've seen a bazillion comics (especially manga comics) where the art is AMAZING, completely blows away anything I can do, but the storyline is so clich

It's been my experience that truly crappy art is usually a sign of total lack of interest in producing a quality comic. This careless attitude will show through in the writing as well.

On the other hand, if the art's bad, but the humor and writing are spot-on, I don't care what it looks like as long as it's obvious that the artist is trying his best to produce good art.

On the other other hand, there's nothing sadder than a beautiful comic strip dragged down by cliched writing or obvious jokes. However, I do read The Makeshift Miracle in spite of Zubkavich's writing troubles, so maybe I'm a big fat hypocrite.

For examples of lackluster art bolstered by what I think is good writing, seeSawdust and my two strips in the sig.
Of course, I'm the one that isn't JP Sloan or Jim North.

I think we all build friendships with others and then get trapped in the "only gonna read my buddies comic" thing. Branching out is good. The best way is just to come to these here forums and try something new.

Although, the writing does have to be half way decent. Art always gets better with time.

Why thank you Kev.

GTOM rocks BTW. Only two episodes and I can see myself reading it for a long time. Besides, that's got to be the best title for a comic ever. That last panel of the second strip is gorgeous.

Finally, somebody besides me who understands the genius of the title!

Sir, your kind words have just made my day.

Validation!
