why are there no political strips out there?

For discussions, announcements, non-technical questions and anything else comics-related or otherwise that doesn't fit in any of the other categories.

...my hope is that my political convictions (more social convictions actually, if you dig the distinction) never get in the way of a good time.
no one ever said politics had to be boring.

political strips aren't a lecture; they are humor with politics woven in. Even if you completely don't understand the political message, often the strip is still funny nonetheless.

you can't expect someone from Australia getting a joke about Lloyd Axeworthy or Allan Rock
Who, and who?

I guess that means I'm from Australia

Actually, it is a completely different sort of 'ignorance' that leads to the violence that you see in the news. Prejudice and misinterpretation (lack of good communication) as well as convoluted histories between people and nations is what causes violence. The violence you see on the news is caused by the misinformation spread through the mass media. You are being lied to and you don't even realise it.

"In today's world you live where everything and everyone is depicted as the lowest, dumbest most simplistic stereotypes. I need to tell you that you are being spoon-fed your reality, but you're calling it entertainment."(Steven Leyba)

My choice to not be involved in, or observe much of the political propaganda does not mean I am ignorant. News is subjective, I would rather make news than watch it. What's going on in your neigbourhood right now? Do you even care?

"[...]you do not want to think, you want to be entertained. You feel safe that the news is written and not reported because to you, all is for your entertainment. This reality eradication you have given your life to is the beginning of the end of all true and personal life experiences" (Steven Leyba)

I am a student, 22, and I am interested in politics, but if I tried to make political comic, you wouldn't get a bit, unless if you're strangely interested it political events in Yugoslavia, and even then, debatable.
Well, really, comics are a good place for politics. Of course, meaning that comics themself are containing politics, but if we would start to argue on politics here on forum or something, that would be inappropriate...
Story: the only magazin with comic news in my land is E-mail magazin StripVesti, and recently it allmost stopped existing because of some people mixing political issues. It all started with rewiev of the "Safe area Gorazde" comic, and ended as an argue between Serbian, Croatian and Slovenian authors and readers. At the end, editor decided to cut all the politics, but the damage was done, some people were allready insulted enough to cut any contact with magazine.

excuse me for using rhetoric. don't talk to me or anyone else like they are a simpleton whose brain is putty to be manipulated by the media. Maybe I'm not as cynical as you are, to think that everything in the news is a biased lie.

I don't watch the news to be told what to think. I watch it to find out what's going on, and make my own decision.

Heh. If I do a political comic with, for instance, Voyslav Sheshelj stabbing someone with a rusty spoon, or Slobodan Miloshevic yelling: "Noone can beat you!" non of the readers would get the joke...

i dont think that really even the point.

i guess it all boils down to whether or not the person likes politics or not. Even if a person lives in the former yugoslavia like McDuffies, if they really wanted to, they could still do world politics.

it seems that most of the people who have online comics simply don't have any intrest in politics or current events (or maybe they do and just don't want to admit it.) whatever the case, i guess my original question is amswered, after such a long, heated discussion.

Is it necessary for me to breathe, eat, digest and excrete politics every minute of my day to prove that I have an interest? I keep current on world events, I read the newspaper, I even read some politically-themed comics (Tom Tomorrow is fucking brilliant). For you to assume that the majority of people who do webcomics don't have any interest in politics just because their comics aren't politically themed is ridiculous.

I don't have any penguins in my comic. Does this mean I have no interest in penguins? No, it doesn't. I happen to find penguins quite fascinating. I just don't think we need another comic strip with penguins in it. By the same token, I am of the opinion that we are bombarded by political rhetoric every time we turn on the telly or pick up a magazine, therefore I like to keep my comic strip light, absurd, and fairly non-political.

Is it okay for people to have non-political hobbies? Do you? I'm starting to wonder.
Of course, I'm the one that isn't JP Sloan or Jim North.

Actually, it is, very.
I publish mcDuffies on an Serbian site, too, on my maternal language. Well, I could very well do a political comic in there, and everyone would get the local political jokes. But I don't. I have a great interest in politics. It's probably impossible not to have, at least in this country. I just don't find myself in making political comic. That wouldn't be enjoying, neather relaxing.

Just a quick note; As much as you'd like to think that you are not a dupe of the media, it still very much influences your ideals and concepts of the current events. It is impossible to recieve unbiased information, and we are used to that.

That is part of the reason that I choose to focus my attention on the things that go on around me, in my little social circle, rather than trying to interpret the convoluted and twisted information that filters through many people's views before reaching me.

Excuse the retartedness of this post, I'm not quite lucid at the moment and am going to go to sleep

ps: Do not ever take anything I say or do as an insult of you personally, I'm talking about your thoughts, perceptions or beliefs; which are all subject to change given a persuasive argument (this is the sort of thing I try to tell people when talking religion)!

if i only got my news from one source, that would be the case. It's true that all news is biased, but it's not all biased in the same way. One of the things I enjoy most about the news is determining WHY the people slant the information the way they do.

as for the actual topic of the thread...
perhaps there would be more political strips if the audience wasn't so large and widespread??

Hm, is this a political thread? I mean, am I supposed to talk about political comics or I can add in my political statement, cause if first is the case, I wouldn't like to put in a subject that has no place here.
But since what I have to say is involving a political statement, if it's second, give me a wink to continue...

Reply with whatever you want, it's a thread about why there are not many political comics, so replies could range from the diversity of readers compared to the localisation and chronology(in half a year would anyone understand the joke?) of political humour, to why baby fur seals taste better deep fried and make the best kind of coats!

*frowns in a confused manner*

Ah, actually, I changed my mind... As short as it can be, I wanted to give a few examples of how politics can be dirty and comics are so nice and I don't really feel like mixing those two...
Story that was supposed to go with that is more suiting to a political forum so... not here...

okay... so now that the thread has really changed to people voicing thier political opinions, here's a question:

would you consider yourself (a) a liberal, (b)a conservative, or (c) a moderate? and do you project this through your comic, no matter how subtly?

I don't know if I'd call "Bloom County" a political strip, even though it was frequently obsessed with politics. However, from the options listed, "Bloom" is definitely my sentimental favorite.

Ahh...back when reading the comic page was something you anticipated rather than something you do out of habit.

Edit: Come to think about, on pure politics, I'd say This Modern World. Bloom still wins the all-around, though.
