What is the Professor doing?
Oh, heck.
Krazap?
Um... If Rumy be dead, I hope she's gone to a better place... I mean what did the General do, fire?
Uh...
(thinking)
Could the prof have a teleport thingie, maybe? And he meant to use it, but Rumy moved, he couldn't teleport them at all, she got... killed/badly wounded... (my hands are shaking!!) and THEN the prof will teleport them somewhere... somewhere safe... Oh, lordy no...
(runs away, shaking nervously)

I don't think so. That was probably just the sound of Rumy's leg breaking on the General's force field.

That, or the General caught Rumy's foot and broke it in mid air... Notice that the force field is down in the last bit.

Hurray for compund fractures!

She had broken her foot, then her EYE wouldn't look like that... She didn't hit ground hard enough to do that, she hit mud.

There's three syllables to the sound effect, so I suspect it was the General using her elite combat skills to hit Rumy with two kicks and a punch, without losing the grip on her gun (which isn't showing signs of being fired.)

the General is, I think, a bit of a showoff. I believe Rumy isn't dead yet, but merely battered, with a few broken bones.

Now the question is, where does the "puppet" part of the title come in?

If that's true, at least Rumy stopped MOVING, then... So the Prof can do his... whatever he wants to do.

Looks like she has a black eye. I suspect she was just beat up, some. Pistolwhipped, maybe?

Looks like the General just roughed her up a little. Okay, maybe a lot. It was definitely not tactically sound, trying to take on six armed, force-shielded opponents... but then, Rumy's judgment always goes out the window when Rikk's involved. Note how far she's come since the beginning of the strip, though, when her weakness was "easily disoriented." I doubt any of the others are having as much success shrugging off the devices' interference.

I'm more worried about Harry right now, he's been missing for three strips, and even though they teleported one of those things (Anybody wonder why the General paused when she said that?) into his ear along with everyone else, I can't help but fear that the blast took him out. Course, Stu is absent, as well...

Speaking of the Professor, it occurs to me that he might not be any kind of alien or Time Lord or whatever -- he might be the FIB backup that Jones promised.

In which case, might he be preparing to whisk the fans off to safety? Does the FIB still have any kind of magic transport system since Jones blasted their captive Xenochicklet?

Oh my. I don't know - those noises, the way her neck is turned, the vacant eye, and all that stuff that may very well be blood? Of all the FANS I was hoping not to see die, Rumy was way up there, but signs point to very very bad right now.

Of course, if Rumy is dead, the General is going down, no two ways about it. Sooner or later.

Geez, that really pisses me off, and as stated before that shows that FANS! is a great comic, but as someone posted before me Rumy is the last character I would want something to happen to. She is just so sweet and cute, but she also has that tragic air about her. Noble to the end. Kind of like Sturm Brightblade in Dragonlance. I don't think that she is dead though I think that the General smacked her hard, and even though she fell on mud. The rain had only just started falling so the ground might still be hard, and counts on how far she fell as well, so i am thinking that she broke her shoulder, but as stated before i really am hoping that was not her neck. Rumy is one of those characters that you just hate, well me anyway and i am sure many others also, hate anything bad happening to. A couple of examples. Sasami from Tenchi Muyo and Lime from Saber Marionette J.

Begging your pardon, but what would you construe as tactically sound in the no-win scenario?

True, the General, in the style of great villains, loves to gloat - but she seems to have been running down, and no one is in the kind of condition to get her to elaborate.

All she could hope to do was buy time, and I don't think anyone's mind was working all that well at the moment. ("But this is real. It's important that you know that." I'd almost think she'd dragged things out so that disoriented minds might have a chance to catch up.) If your goal is to save Rikk, and you have no time to identify a weakness you can exploit against your adversary, you distract the adversary.

Rikk is her King, and this is a speed game. Tactically, defending the King is usually sound, especially when there doesn't seem to be another move on the board to save him.

And yet, after saying all that, I'm not sure that Rumy was the one who decided on that attack. I'm not sure the time machine is what we think it is, either.

You know, T stated that one of the main characters would die, but he never claimed that they would stay dead.

With time machines and alternate universes abounding just now, it wouldn't be too hard for someone to die, and then for reality to be altered in some way to stop it having happened.

Plus, I know T reads Gaming Guardians, who pulled a similar stunt a while back.

I'm betting that whoever it is who'll die will indeed stay dead. 'Fans' has a way of making consequences be of consequence...

No comments from me today.

Just wanted to agree with a few things mentioned. If Rumy is dead, I have no doubt she'll stay that way. The same goes for anyone else that gets toasted.

As for the lack of FIB backup, and the idea that Dr Why _is_ the backup, that would explain a lot. He could still be an alien and a FIB agent. Recall that the FIB once tried to use "monsters" as agents. It didn't work out well, we're told. Dr Why would be another story all together, though, especially if he's stranded like the BBC Doctor was during his third incarnation.

Someone already mentioned this theory, actually a day or two ago, as an explanation of why they thought Rumy would be the one to die - since there's Rumi from the AU available to step in to fill her role. There was some speculation on the consequences of beinging in (at least temporarily) a version of Rumy who actually had gotten together with Rikk.

I can't remember who it was, though, and I can't find the thread now...

I like chess, but I'd rather play pinball.

I could live with that option... maybe...

And Rumi's likely to be a lot more forward about her interest in Rikk than Rumy was, which should really heat up that little love triangle.

Except that her interest was in Rick, not Rikk. That could make all the difference.

Hmm... another interesting possibility. Anyone else seen Red Dwarf Season 7? (Alternate Kochanski completely uninterested in the cruder version of Lister.) We're not sure if there's any serious differences between Rick and Rikk though, besides past experiences...
