PS: What about square banners? Somebody mentioned they were good to have, but what do they get used for? other than the Keenspace newsbox maybe...
Some forums let you include a small square image with every post. Also, there are a few comic directories that use square "thumbnail" banners. (OCAD is one.)

Square banners (60x60 (avatar size) or 80x80 (OCAD size)) can be used as art samples.

If and when I get around to a tinami-style layout for my keendex system, I'm going to use either the square or the medium types of banners, depending if I can make it look decent on smaller screens (the Large banners require adding more verticial space since you can't fit anything beside them.)

So fair warning, make square banners(60x60 is ideal because the lists will be long) and rectangle 120x40 types of banners now.

Ah! New forums I didn't even know existed... I am listed in the OCAD directories, but I didn't know they had a forum. And what's "avatar"? Would you have a link to it?

By golly now I can spread my blabbing over a wider area of the net

Um... btw the banner thing for the OCAD forum (which I've just been checking out, thanks  ) is it one and the same with the "thumbnail" they ask you for when you sign up for a profile? I don't see any place to create a custom signature for the forums or anything...

Hummm, personnaly I'm drawn to banners that portray their comic and have some good art, even if the comic's not to that standard then it at least shows they might draw that well one time

Hehe, I understand the whole 'hyping up' thing (basically art that's better than what the actuall comic is) but, meh, it looks nicer and I don't really care for readers  If it pleases me, then I'm happy! Humm, maybe if I got a counter I might be more interested in hits... Hummm...

Anyway! My own banner! Furry, main character and the main character's sister, she hasn't had that big a role yet but the other guy just didn't seem to fit... Anyway:

I like PaperBug's one personnaly, I think it's a very good example to us all. Yes...

I guess color and aesthetics catches my attention the most, although a catchy phrase, joke, or lead will also do the trick. I click on it if it looks like something I'd be interested in, so I think a good banner tries to represent the whole of what it links to. Sort of a synecdoche...right. I think I've had too much anthropology lately. Anyhow, that's what catches my attention. Contrasting colors, bright colors, effective use of colors. Just like shiny tin foil.

Huh? OCAD has a forum??
All I know is, I'm listed in their directory, and they ask you for some kind of small square banner. I signed up almost a year ago, so I don't really remember the specifics...

From your last post I got the impression you were saying OCAD had a forum that needed a thumbnail picture as a sig or something. Meanwhile I've checked out the OCAD forum and it's (from what I can see) very stupid. Anybody have links to cartoonists-forums other than these Keenspace ones?

Oh no! Comicon? Does that mean everyone's going to be dressed as Klingons and Xena?

   Gaak!!

Why oh why did I ever go to that page? One of the links had an advertisement for some other webcomic, which apparently has a very very similar title to mine. My comic is ARG! and his is <a href="http://albert.nickerson.tripod.com/home ... RGGH!!! His comic started long before mine was public, it's better drawn, and has more exclamation points to boot. I... I really don't know what to do about that. Our comics are nothing alike (Mine is comedy, theirs is some kind of super hero action thingey), but I feel horrible using the name of an older, inevitably more popular strip. Am I doomed now? Ho boy... I think I need to go lie down...

If you'll feel better, I prefer ARG! over ARGGH! I never liked superheroes. Shallow.

(what catches your eye? sometimes it runs right out of the socket end the only thing that can catch it is a butterfly net)

There there Jaster, I still love you! I prefer ARG! personnaly, it's simpler and has a correct amount of exclamation marks, I never liked exclamation marks in abundence. People abuse them so...

Oh, and also because ARG! is the same name as a Half Life mod involving pirates, coconuts and big bastard swords...

It's scary in there, really, just don't click, you'll thank me later...

I know! Just add a ' and you'll be sorted! That's what I did! I'm not quite Noggin or Nogging! Mwuhahah! Man I love loopholes!

you mean, like, "Ar'!" That really would make me sound like a pirate though, and ruins the acronym. And yeah, that was one of the scarier webpages that I've visited. The background alone has sent scores of brave men cowering for their lives! Death awaits you all with nasty big pointy teeth!!

But yeah, regardless of that other fellow's fancy "college degrees" in art, and all the alleged "years of experience" inking for professional comic books, I'm gonna step out on a limb and say that I've had bowls of alphabet soup that could write better than that guy. Maybe if I knew what "Nihilist" meant, I'd find it oh-so-clever. But yeah, I figure from this point on I just proceed with my lack-of-any-art-classes-ever and pretend his site doesn't exist.

Jaster: your comic kicks that other guy's comic's ass. That sentence doesn't sound right.

Sides, I'd rather type ARG! cuz it's smaller and more to the point.

Maybe it's:
"Your comic kicks ass of the other guy's comic"?
