Hey Watchman!
Yeah. That crow will give me a hard time. And this isn't the last time it will appear. Ugh. The size of the crow in the latest episode wasn't pretty consistent between panel 3 and 4. O well.
As for Sarren, yeah, he is turning up that bad-guy charm.
The bad news for me is that the crow is there again on the next page. Sigh.

That's one *evil* familiar then...not only a pain to draw, but invites itself to every page.
You know Geejay, I think that crow is going to give you a bigger dose of PAIN than the doctor ordered every time you want to include it...
It's definitely gotten better since the last incarnation, though - you still need to practice on the tail and the size (crows are pretty big), but nothing major. The red eyes *do* give off a nice sinister effect.
And Sarren looks pretty darn cool. I wonder if that's one of the perks of being a bad guy...
Might be that we're thinking of different birds now (as Yours Truly only speaks English as his fourth language and has a hard time with bird names anyway), but aren't blackbirds the orange-beaked birdies you can see hopping around the lawn chasing bugs ?
They're couldn't look half as sinister as crows can to save their lives...
[This message has been edited by Watchman (edited 01-14-2002).]
[This message has been edited by Watchman (edited 01-14-2002).]

Hi guys.
You know what is more difficult than drawing a crow perched on something? Drawing a crow in flight... from a worm's eye angle view. Ugh! Anyway, I'm sticking with Runean as being a crow. Just swallow that for now until I get better at drawing it.
------------------

Well you *could* always try to make a jackdaw out of it...all that is needed is a total beak overhaul, different color scheme and body shape, and smaller size.
Easy, yes ? <IMG SRC="http://www.keenspace.com/forums/tongue. ... cidentally, didn't familiars have a telepathic link to their masters ? Not that I had anything against taking the Bush-stupid D&D rules and bending them until they scream, mind you.
[This message has been edited by Watchman (edited 01-15-2002).]

Hi guys!
Yes, Runean (the bird) and Sarren do have telepathic linking but I need to visually show that Runean is telling Sarren something here. I made it my convention that the familiar actually talks to its master but nobody else hears the "talking" going on. So in a way, it is a form of telepathy.

------------------

Personally I'd go with the thought-bubbles-with-weird-outlines-dialogue approach, but that's just me. And besides, villains are supposed to hold monologues while looking cool, no ?
Sure familars have the telepathic link to their masters and whatnot. Though what information is passed through this link is another matter altogether.
Some telepathic links are more intimate than others, and really I wouldn't place crows very high on list of sharing your deepest secrets and feelings with. The chances that they would care, let along really understand are slim to none.
It's really all left to the imagination.

Hmm... I'll have a think on that word balloon suggestion. And as for bats as familiar, I would also prefer a bird over a bat.
------------------

Matters of taste aside, consider the following:
- drow are by default born and bred in Underdark, since the surface is in several ways rather hostile to them
- dismissing your old familiar has the same effect on your almighty Exp score as it getting killed
- almost everything down there sees without light; almost no familiar does
Ergo, of all the animals listed (in the rather limited PHB, anyway) a bat would be the *only* real choice for a drow, as the others would be nigh useless and wont to get eaten by the next critter that happens to wander by.
Unless you postpone creating the little critter to after you got to the surface, but that's not something most of them plan to do early on - and even then, since drow have certain "issues" with sunlight, a familiar with nightvision would be a must.
Plus Fliedermaus are *cute*.

well, i myself have grown quite attached to that raven, and i must admit that it is not, my creation, She was given to him, and is controlled, via a Pendent that he wears, but yes all rules to familiers are inacted and and yes i would, be in trouble having her die.
buts here a cool question.....If Drizzt Do'urden was in modern times, what Guns would he use, or would he use guns ? =)
------------------

Urgh. Please don't mention Drizzizzit again, I'm allergic to Salvatore.
But as it goes, I'd imagine him going for a pair of silenced .45 semiautos, prolly with lasersights. Jolly old Artemis certainly would, anyway.
Ah, familiars. Reminds me of the only mage I ever had who had a familiar. A cat-man(about a foot tall I think). He was spoiled, even had a custom made backpack where there was a spot for him to curl up in. He was something else. And he caused me a load of trouble as well. Oh boy did he cause trouble. Advice to any GMs out there, familiars think, and thus familiars can get into trouble. Familiars get into trouble, wizards come running to save them. Yes, cruel, I know.
As to the issue of the crow, hey, they are considered in terms of mythology to be "dark" creatures, so its a fitting choice for our dear mister bad boy mage. His choice of clothing only seems to make him seem more sinister, dont know why, but it just feels that way to me.
Animals are never easy to draw, especially doing them consistently anyway. Geejay! Keep up the good work!
