Mike: I'm using Mac OS X, beeotch! And no plug-in works with it! Bwahahahaha!
Kludge: Open, eh? Damn I wish I knew Objective C. Then I could make my own damn plug-in... Well, if it's a W3C recommendation it should be in OmniWeb by 4.5. Hopefully.
Everybody else: Look over there! Candy!

It's kind of a non-proprietary version of the .swf files that Flash produces, but all nice and open so that anyone can easily make tools for it.
(Also, although the plug-in is 3meg, it's worth noticing that the SVG version of "Fly By Night" is only 13k - compared with the original version's 208k. If the entire archive were in SVG, the savings might offset the download cost of the plug-in).
The only reason it's not a normal format is it's too young for any of the browser makers to have competently included it directly in the browser (there is supposedly SVG support in IE5.5, but it's reported to be rubbish).
Believe me, I don't lightly ask people to download plug-ins.
END BORING MODE
Do American telephone directories have the entry British ones used to have (until the Civil Engineers Society made them remove it):
Civil Engineers - See Boring.
------------------

Hi Keith,
Currently the Adobe SVG Viewer isn't supported on MacOS X. As for a timetable,
we have a policy of not discussing unannounced products, but I can say that we
evaluate support for additional platforms based mostly on the numbers of seats
they represent.

Umm, this might mean they'll do it later, or it might mean "f**k off". I'm not quite sure.

quote:

You should keep checking www.adobe.com for updated versions of the viewer,
which will be posted there when they become available. Until then you may be able to
run in Classic mode.

No idea if "run in Classic mode" is applicable to you, but I'll assume not, because you seem smart enough to have worked something like that out.
Keith "But if you didn't, I don't mean to insult your intelligence. Well, they probably will port it to X if they're going to keep it at all, since Apple is dropping all support (Developer and otherwise) for OS 9.x relatively soon.
And everybody hates classic mode. It's like running two operating systems on the same computer at the same time. BECAUSE IT IS. It's only there because of "backward compatibility", which is only a myth anyhow. It barely works and if I so much as touch a copy of IE or Netscape it screws up my preferences.
So, no. Thanks anyway, though.

I like it, but if you've read "Fly By Night" in static format, you've already seen all the content, of course). I do like to expend a little effort to include non-Windows folks, though.
Just out of interest, do you have a C/C++ compiler on your machine? I only ask because my next project might be a bit more inclusive, although I'll need to get someone to compile it up if I want to include a mac version.

------------------

I've got NeXT cc (100% gcc compatible) and Apple ProjectBuilder. I have no idea how to use the latter, however, and I don't have X Windows or the relevant libraries, so I can only make basic Unix programs like fortune and bash and stuff... I could install X Windows if necessary, though.
[This message has been edited by Dezro (edited 08-03-2001).]

Yay! Adobe made a Carbon SVG Plugin!
Now all I have to do is wait until OmniWeb 4.1 comes out, since 4.0.5 can't load Java plugins!
::gigantic, forced smile::

Hooray! Because I've not been able to think of a reason why my work should buy me a copy of Flash...

Hmmmm, niceness... I think I might look into doing some of this myself (I enjoy text based 3D modeling, and I have no life to speak of )...
------------------
