So Shiro, when do we get to see how the title plays into the strip's plot?
Just wondering...

Big Confession Time
It's called Ancient Messages solely based on the fact that I cannot title stuff. The name popped into my head one day and I decided it was better than the title I was working under. (which was, believe it or not, "Pure.") I ran across a song called "Blood and Thunder" a few weeks back, and thought "Wow, that would be a great title for my comic." But I've got the name Ancient Messages, it gets recognized, and I'm comfortable with it now.
I think the forum looks pretty silly: up at the top, there's the link that says "Keenspace Message Boards," and under that, the one that says "Ancient Messages." So what does that say about all the posts in here?
As far as I can tell, the title refers to Lyssa and Gill's cursed bloodline and the spells and traditions that have been passed down along it.
But if anyone else has another interpetation, I'd really like to hear it!
[This message has been edited by Shiro (edited 02-20-2001).]

Dear Pharao Akhenaten's Mum,
I hope you are well. Here in Mitanni, all is well. We've still got that sunny spell going that's been with us for the past decade or two.
Could you please have a word with your stingy, no-good son about the importance of gift-giving among divinely-ordained despots? I mean, the last batch of sculptures he sent were all made of gold-covered papyrus pulp. That just won't do. My last gift to him wasn't made of papyrus pulp was it? And it's not like harems grow on trees.
Anyway, here's a box of that powdered gelatine stuff you like. Hope to hear from you soon.
Love, Tushratta

Serious answer:
Uncle Gill is an archeologist. So far we've only seen him write his big paper, but surely he's done field work at some time?
And what if... one day he found a clay tablet that he decided should not be shared with the scientific community? Something...weird?

I was thinking more along the lines of there being some ancient texts which cast light on this whole curse thing. There are a lot of unanswered questions in Lyssa's world.
Like...
Why are people like Gill and Lyssa required, ie, is there some overall reason the monsters attack people? Are they just hungry or is there some invasion plan or some such with some unknown being directing the action.
What is the source of the curse? Since it is (or at least appears to be) contained in one family, which ancestor was saddled with it first and why? And why that family? Or there others who know of/see the monsters and are there other slayers (the term is probably copyrighted by Warner Bros, but for the purposes of this message...) besides the ones in Lyssa's family?
You say they have a cursed bloodline. Is it a curse in the sense that someone/thing cursed the family for some reason, or is it that the family was chosen to bear a sacred responsibility and it has become a curse because it exacts such a toll on the chosen ones?
And what does reindeer boy have to do with it? And the "good" monsters, what role do they play?
So, maybe the texts/tablets/whatever can give clues to the answers.
Anyway, lots of questions and actually I don't expect an answer. In fact I'd rather see them answered in story arcs. I really like the "Epic" feel to AM and how there seems to be a lot going on that we don't know about yet. I look forward to seeing the story unfold.

Heh. Today's (2/22) strip already has an answer to one of my questions. Ask and ye shall receive! Cool!
And yes, I know Shiro has these done well in advance so it wasn't my asking that prompted her to put that in, but I thought the timing was rather appropriate.

BTW, "Reinder" is Reinder's real name. He draws Rogues of Clwyd-Rhan.
------------------

In countless documents sent straight to the shredder
That might finally give us the whole of the picture

At the end of a disconnected phone
Down an unmarked street
And buried, deep beneath your feet."

Well, the Valentine's day lyric has a tune which (sigh) I haven't got around to recording yet. Also, I've joked about recording sound with the "ROCR musical cast" - there is no ROCR musical (yet!) but the people involved have been the cast of a musical based on a comic by my friends Geir Str

I want a reindeer, but I don't know how to take care of one... :'( I'm afraid it will turn to a big pile of bones one day... and THEN what will I do with it?
Maybe seeing Reinder on the forums is the next best thing!

Actually, the similiarity did occur to me as I was writing it. But no, I do know the difference between reindeer and Reinder.
BTW, how is Reinder pronounced? I have been saying "rain dur". I am probably mangling it by trying to say a Dutch name in an American english accent!

Wow, I can just feel all the drunken bar songs and bawdy ballads just screaming to get out of you. That's so cool.. I don't have a musical bone in my body. I love it, and appreciate it, but I can't carry a tune in a basket.
Wait, we're cluttering Katherine's message board..... um, let's bring it back... if Ancient Messages had a theme song, what would it be like?

I have a good sound recording of both "Clwyd-Rhan" and "Reinder Dijkhuis" on tape, but haven't got around to editing and digitizing it yet. I should hurry up, because it also contains some great Faerie Wythllew dialogue, and a sound version of a panel that will be up in two weeks, in which Scarabus the Earth-Pig, played by my brother, tries very hard not to think of breasts. It of course ends with him going "BRRREASTS! BRRRREASTS!" in a hysterical tone of voice...

I've been wondering about that for a while, and I'm completely stumped. It would be pretty cool if AM had a theme song, but I can't think of what it would sound like.

I'm guessing it would be sung by Tori Amos, or maybe the Cure.

I dunno about a theme song, but Krystof Penderecki would make good background music. Or maybe Anne Dudley.
------------------
