Re: Query: Reading your own comic?
I re-read my stuff pretty frequently. For some reason it takes me forever to determine if something needs to be fixed or not, so constantly re-visiting my work helps. I guess it's like when I write a manuscript and keep going back through it for edits....except, y'know, it's already online while I'm editing so everyone can see what an amateur I am.
And I'll admit it. I amuse myself. If you don't like what you do, what's the point?

I agree with this, it also helps create payoffs for fans if you can allude to something that happened say 50 so strips back or so.Komiyan wrote:If it's an ongoing story, you pretty much *have* to.. I know I didn't for a while, but then readers would catch me out with minor things I'd forgotten and I'd feel like an idiot.
Re: Query: Reading your own comic?
I reread my stuff fairly often, especially if it's something I'm actively working on. Like, I'm working on a 24 page story now, and I can't tell you how many times I've looked through it, particularly the finished pages. Checking to see if it makes sense (or not if it's Tile...), flows well, is unified. Sometimes I try and imagine how someone else would read it. Though I have in general a habit of staring at something I just drew for a good long while. And that's actually how I do my writing on my longer stories... stare and stare and the portraits I drew of all the characters.

Thinking about it now, I did this more back when I used to do shorter, complete stories all the time. I always got really excited when I was done and the thing was all glued together and had a cover page and I could look at it as a finished product instead of a work in progress.

Re: Query: Reading your own comic?
Reading your own comics is a little bit like masturbation and a little bit like masochism.
In other words, it's a lot like masturbating to a picture of Rosie O'Donnell
I reread my comics from 2004 and 2006 earlier this year. I didn't hate it as much as I remembered hating it at the time.

so what you're suggesting is that you almost enjoyed the particular activity you alluded to?Guildmaster Van wrote:Reading your own comics is a little bit like masturbation and a little bit like masochism.

*hurk*
No, I don't look at my old stuff at all really, although some of it fills me with fond nostalgia most of it makes me cringe. I want to be a great cartoonist, so I compare myself to great pencillers, inkers, writers and cartoonists in general and spaz over how what it is I do is leagues away from what they do, and I literally go back to the drawing board. What killed my comic isn't really laziness as much as it is perfectionism. The first version of White Hydra I did last longer than the second version because I wasn't as conscious about it when I first started.
It boils down to wanting to be as good as the best, to achieve your own personal best.
I wanna be the very best,
Like no one ever was.
To catch them is my real test,
To train them is my cause.
I will travel across the land,
Searching far and wide
Each Pokemon to understand,
The power that's inside.
POKEMON! (GOTTA CATCH'EM ALL!)
It's you and me!
I know it's my destiny!
POKEMON!
Ooooooh, you're my best friend,
In a world we must defend.
POKEMON! (GOTTA CATCH'EM ALL!)
Our hearts so true,
Our courage will pull us through.
You teach me and I'll teach you.
PO-KE-MON!
Gotta catch'em all
Gotta catch'em all
Yeaaahh..
Every challenge along the way,
With courage I'll face.
I will battle everyday,
To claim my rightful place.
Come with me, the time is right,
There's no better team.
Arm in arm, we'll win the fight,
It's always been our dream.
POKEMON! (GOTTA CATCH'EM ALL!)
It's you and me!
I know it's my destiny!
POKEMON!
Ooooohhhhh you're my best friend,
In a world we must defend.
POKEMON! (GOTTA CATCH'EM ALL!)
Our hearts so true,
Our courage will pull us through.
You teach me and I'll teach you,
POKEMON!
Gotta catch'em all!
Gotta catch'em all!
Gotta catch'em all!
Gotta catch'em all!
Yeeeaaaaaaahhhhhhh!
POKEMON! (GOTTA CATCH'EM ALL!)
It's you and me!
I know it's my destiny!
POKEMON!
Ooooohhhhh you're my best friend,
In a world we must defend.

It's good to look back at your old work. It keeps ideas fresh in your mind helping you to put them together coherently, and it lets you see your progression, what you've been doing wrong, what you did right, and what's changed over the years.
