That's how you know it's mine
What makes your comic identifiable as Yours TM? Styles, tools used, annoying visual quirks that you wish you didn't have, etc...
People tell me I can portray emotions very well.
All of my people tend to have pentagon shaped heads.
I have to do the "hold it backwards up to the light" test all the time as a precautionary measure becase no matter how hard I try, everything gets bigger to the diagonal right. This is because when I draw I'm very close to the paper, and I only really focus out of my left eye (HOORAY VISUAL HANDICAPMENTS), so a) I have poorer depth perception than your average minnow and b) bigger things farther away from Good Eye seem the same size as the smaller things closer to Good Eye.
What about all a y'all?

Re: That's how you know it's mine
To quote McDuffles, I have a crude style. I can draw, and I can do some things that are decent in some aspects (not that there aren't genuinely space for improvements) even when drawing from life I tend to translate the universe into lines that make sense and proportion but there's something "off" about them. It's a reflection of my personality perhaps, I haven't really changed core identity since I was much younger. It shows.
And I tend to try "for the epic" in my stories.

Re: That's how you know it's mine
Dislike of 95% of comics ever made and determination to be as different from them as possible.
Re: That's how you know it's mine
Mine is probably more obvious, in that I insist on using Noir style with grays, and only a few splashes of color. Not to mention my stubborn insistence on using traditional media.
Re: That's how you know it's mine
Hmm, a few things off the top of my head.
-The torsos on my characters are only 2 heads tall instead of 3, though I draw heads a bit larger than usual so it kind of works out.
- Noses are conditional, they disapear when an expression becomes exagerated.
- Flat upper lips, round bottom lips
Thats all I got right now.

I have the first lego comic.
-D. M. Jeftinija Pharm.D., Ph.D. -- Yes, I've got two doctorates and I'm arrogant about it, what have *you* done with *your* life?
"People who don't care about anything will never understand the people who do." "yeah.. but we won't care."
"Legostar's on the first page of the guide. His opinion is worth more than both of yours."--Yeahduff

Re: That's how you know it's mine
I tend to draw people very slouchy. I've also recently taken to using what I like to call "the rubber arms."
Re: That's how you know it's mine
If I don't think out a better plan before I start drawing, all my panels are full of heads and shoulders and all my characters wear long-sleeve t-shirts. I can't stop myself from filling a page with color even when I'm supposedly going for a noir feel. I have a hard time drawing exaggerated features and expressions, they just look wrong to me.

Re: That's how you know it's mine
I'm told that my character's faces are very "geometrical," whatever that means. Otherwise, I'd have to say detail in the background. I care a lot about backgrounds.

Re: That's how you know it's mine
Nobody has ever told me I've had a style... the closest thing I've gotten was "It's not crap!"
I know I'm not a great artist and never will be (my strength is in the written word), so I'll settle for "it's not crap"
edit: I do have a strength on which people compliment me -- I will immediately edit a drawing that has major errs.

Re: That's how you know it's mine
I have the last! I don't know really. In my case I think it's my building style and production. It's hard to say with photocomics unless you are a professional photographer.Dr Legostar wrote:I have the first lego comic.
Re: That's how you know it's mine
I don't ink. I paint with Photoshop. That digital speedpaintish style is mine. I have never seen another comic come near to my style. A couple similar, but nothing quite like it. Writingwise, if it has no main character and no conventional 'hero saves the world' plot, but rather a bunch of psychobabble while stuff happens that might possibly be epic while dealing with multiverses, timetravel or dreams and magic forms, it may be mine as well.

pseudo-anime, apparently.
i also used to use punctuation like semicolons in my text bubbles. i try not to do that so much now.

Re: That's how you know it's mine
I actually enjoy using perspective, and tend to work harder on the backgrounds than my characters.
I always have inconsistensies in my art. Characters that are supposed to have cartoony, four-fingered hands will suddenly have five fingers on one page, rooms will seems bigger sometimes or too narrow at others, and I've even misspelled the name of the story's setting on the a sign once. I frequently forget to put windows in the right spots on walls that are supposed to have them. This doesn't bother me much, since I never notice inconsistenties in other people's art so I don't tend to look for them in my own. But I'm sure some readers will find them distracting.
