Yeah, I watched that. Apparently 'real' Gor fans don't like those movies, because in them, Cabot works to END slavery.

Oy.

Aside from some dumb-ass seduction sequences it was pretty standard B-fantasy fare.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

The film turned 20 years old a few days ago (June 24, in fact) and seemingly hasn't aged a bit.

last night was my first Rocky Horror Picture Show screening. I wasn't gutsy enough to dress up this time, but will next. I'll also have to put together a more complete props kit, all I had was a newspaper.

Just saw Get Smart. Don't understand all those critics who bashed it. I had a great time.

Saw Wall-E, and it was the antithesis of what the trailers led you to expect. Wanted a fuzzy wuzzy cutesy movie? No. It's directed as an art film, containing dark themes, and a splash of social commentary. Not for the kids.

Still, it was amazing. 5/5.

Saw Get Smart. Had a fun time. Steve Carrell is...Steve Carrell but cocky and goofy at the same time. It actually works pretty damn well. His trademark deadpans, extreme vocal expressions, etc are all present and put to good work. Anne Hathaway was gorgeous and not simply treated as eye candy, which was nice. She has some talent in her and I like what she does.

Saw WALL-E. LOVED it. It's not a kiddie movie, but it's not serious. It's got some kind of intense moments but this is Pixar we're talking about. They are the masters of the modern animated movie. You get some great laughs, some great "awwws", and times when you want to cheer. This is a good movie, I had a lot of fun seeing it and I love everything these people put out. It was exactly what I wanted and nothing like what I expected. I actually found myself going "Oh man, what happens next?!? I have no idea where this is going and that's so kickass!" See it.

I also saw WALL-E. I loved the credits motif! And while that's a really weird thing to say about a movie, everyone else has covered what can really be covered without spoilers.

Also, I want an Otto. Real bad. I don't CARE that I don't have a space station to put him in, Otto was freakin' awesome! Best robot design in the movie!

Gonna see Get Smart on Tuesday, I'm looking forward to it!

yeah, I hope to go see Wall-E this weekend. I was thinking about seeing Hancock but, as I feared, the only good bits were in the trailer.

saw Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas last night. I had no idea how many big names were involved in making it! ok, all those names still didn't help it make any sense, but there were still a few LOL moments, and it's worth a second viewing. I just don't know if I'm all that interested in seeing Gonzo when it comes out next week.

I love that film. It doesn't carry out political ideas of the book (luckily, it would be too late for that anyway) but it's an impressive sight/sount carpet-bombing.

I saw Howard the Duck yesterday... apparently there's a limit to how much crap people could take even in 80ies. Though frankly, it's just one clumsily-made doll and some forced wannabe-adult scenes away from many brookheymer hits of that period.

Howard the Duck fucking sucked. I later found out that it was a comic book originally, and it pissed off all the fans because it was supposedly good. George Lucas doesn't like the associate himself with the film anymore.

I don't know whether Lucas disowned it after he saw it or after he saw how miserably it was received... but he apparently put a lot of money into it originally, so it was such a big blow that he had to sell one of his animation departments, which later became Pixar... so something good came out of it.
Basically it's a standard 80ies adventure film, it doesn't have much worse script than many of blockbasters of the time, say, Three Men and a Craddle or Gremilns or Bateries not Included. But it had one of the most uncharismatic main characters ever: a dwarf in a duck costume that was so badly made that he could barely move his beak and had about one muscle in the eyebraws region - and that was the range of emotions the character could show. Considering wonderful robots from Labyrinth, I thought that all that money would be at least blown on animating the main character, but apparently it wasn't,
The other big problem was that it was conciped as a film for adults, but since it's modeled on family movie stereotypes, all those "adult" elements seem forced - like two gratituous shots of duck boobs (thank you very much

) in the duck land, and absence of any human boobs in the rest of the movie - seem more like "hommage" to adult nature of original comic than a real attempt at adult film. So the problem might be that the film couldn't be marketed to kids and families, but that type of film couldn't be very appealing to other audiences.
As I've heard, original comic was more a sort of satire and risky comedy, so when it was made completely different, trendy and cheap, they must have been as mad as I was when I heard of Solaris remake.
Basically, under different circumstances, film probably might have been good, but under no circumstances could it have been profitable - so anyone who put so much money into it must have been out of their mind.

I've read that the scene where condom is found in Howard's wallet was long censored, but they say nothing about duck boobs. If they could only predict the furrydom developent...

I finally got round to seeing Cloverfield, I liked it. Didnt LOVE it, but I liked it. It was worth a watch, but I feel a cinema viewing would have done it more justice. Camera didnt piss me off as much as people said it would, and I gotta say now I've seen the beaurocratic BS of being behind the camera, I appreciate how hard it musta been to film. But some of the CGI was a bit iffy, even on my laptop. But besides that, I did rather like it. Its been a while since we had an old fashioned "Yeah theres a monster fucking everything up, so what?" movie, instead of "WELL YOU SEE WE WERE POLLUTING ITS NATURAL HABITAT SO IT KINDA HAD TO ATTACK US, MAN IS THE REAL BEAST"
