Sam's Club still surprises me. Their low low prices make the fact that I'm buying from an evil corporation something that I can ignore. "We have cookies...sixty-four packs for $6.99 each!" "SIXTY FOUR FOR SIX NINETY-NINE??!?!" And Alaska doesn't even really count--the shipping adds a lot to the prices of food here.

Eh, but that's something that happened in the past too. Most of today's European culture is based on some tribes moving in to the ground of other tribes and pushing out their culture. Never completely successful though, because in the end cultures usually mix, creating something different from both.

that's an extreme right talking point you're using there, Van. it's what Reagan used in the 1980's to gut American welfare, and part of what has kept the left from rebuilding it. well, that and the bizarre logic that a state welfare system somehow takes something away from people, because giving money to charity is a feel-good privilege for the rich, and having the state keep people fed and clothed somehow ruins it.

private charity should NEVER be relied on to provide basic welfare, it will never have the needed resources and will get too bogged down trying to cover bottom lines and not the established mission.

Does welfare accept donations? Maybe they should. I wonder how many rich people would donate to a charity that was state-ran instead of, say, by a church or a philanthropist or whatever.

More friend bitching

So my previously mentioned friend in is a photography class this summer as I think I have mentioned. Well in this class it is required to participate in group critiques. My friend doesn't like talking in class much but she talks during our drawing critiques when it's her turn to show her art and she says she tries to talk about her work in her photo class but in this class you also have to critique other students works as well...even if you're just saying what you like about it. Well she doesn't and hasn't been getting credit for it so she usually gets low grades on the critiques. At the last critique(Wednesday for time reference) the instructor skipped over my friends work and when one of the students pointed that out the instructor said that they shouldn't critique the work of someone who doesn't feel the need to critique others and she asked my friend if she wanted to offer any critique on anyone's work and that if she did they would talk about hers.
At this point my friend left the room. Not stepped out, she grabbed her stuff and just walked out. She came into the office where I was working putting together our gallery's big yearly show's catalog, there were other professors there so she basically walked in and walked out. I didn't really notice her because I was working. A friend of mine told me that she'd looked upset and that that day was critique day and that she must have gotten an unfavorable critique. Not wanting to sit through the inevitable "Everyone hates my work cause they're all robots" I put off calling her for about 4 minutes but I called her because I was worried. Well I tried about 3 times and she kept rejecting the call. So I turn on aim and message her, after a rather snarky net "What" and "yeah you called, and I didn't answer" I said she'd looked upset but I'd missed her and asked what was wrong and she told me what I described above. Well she told it with a slant toward her and frequent saying that the teacher is failing her in the class for not talking and that all of grades have been F's. Turns out she's only gotten one grade back so far and it was only an F because she turned it in way late. She also said that everyone in the class hates her work because it isn't what's popular and that they never say anything about her stuff. When I asked some girls in the class about that they said she frequently gets very positive feedback from alot of them.
And so you know my description of Wednesday's events is comprised of speaking to my friend, speaking to the teacher, and speaking to some of the people in her class.
She's convinced now that she is failing this class and she refuses to drop the class. She has tried to explain this logic to me but I can't explain why she is doing this I just know that she is and refuses to listen to why it is better to drop than to fail. She also refuses to speak to the instructor about any of it and is simply going to stop attending the class. She says she will never take a class with this instructor again and that the instructor was being extremely disrespectful to her.
Her concentration is Photography and the only other instructor is the department head, who only teaches the high level classes now that this new instructor is here. Also he is known to not give soft critiques, he's even been known to tear up a print or two. Her critique she felt the need to walk out of had nothing to do with her work and she walked out I can't imagine how she'd fair in the higher classes if she ever makes it that high.
She also skipped drawing that day.
Today she came in after her photo class was over and when she entered the building I was talking to two girls who I am friends with who are in her photo class and our drawing class. When I walked over to say hi to her she said I had abandoned her to talk to those people. I kinda just shook that off and went back to one of them because she wanted to ask me about my comic. When I got back to my friend she said "Everyone's looking at me like I'm an idiot or something and you keep abandoning me to talk to those people for 3 hours" I was only gone about 3 minutes but I told her that the girl had asked me about my comic and joked that I "always have time for fans". She then called me a liar. Which I also shrugged off and left to get my art box, while on the way I got stopped by one of the girls who needed help hanging negatives. My friend walked through, uh oh spotted with one of them again! When I got into class I was picking out a seat and wanted an easel, well the only open one was next to the girl who'd asked me about my comic and there were no seats near my friend, also the view of the model was ass and the view by the girl was great so I started over there and my friend said "Everyone's looking at me like I'm stupid and now you're deserting me for those people.(I am not kidding she really kept saying it).
Well that was the last straw. I said, a bit more forcefully than I intended to "I am going to sit where I want to DRAW." I am a drawing major who values school and I come to class to work not talk. We didn't speak for the duration of the class and I honestly don't intend to initiate anything.

Y'know, your posts don't make you sound like a very sensitive person. In fact, you come off as pretty judgmental. School can be very hard, especially for people who aren't used to giving or receiving feedback. If you don't like this girl or her antics, and it really sounds like you don't, then you are not "friends." Stop talking with her. Period. She'll either disappear, or find new friends who actually have it in their souls to support her, right or wrong. Don't drag out false friendships, simply because you feel sorry for someone. It's just ridiculous to keep someone hanging on the line like that.

I suppose you say that because you don't know everything. We went to community college together for Commercial art. We graduated together and are now both pursuing 4 year degrees. We both have gone through really tough no nonsense critiques and trust me none of the proffs at this uni give harsh critiques except for maybe the dept head. And as I did mention she has no problem with the critiques in drawing class. She knows how to critique, she's used to it, she just chooses not to do it. To the point of accusing the teacher of trying to change who people are by requiring participation. She is perfectly capable of doing the work, doing it well, and getting a great mark on it. For some reason in the 2 years we've been at this uni she has gotten very childish about her school work and her interactions with people. All she wants to do all day is sit around and talk about how stupid everyone here is and that they're all whores. I'm not exaggerating. She also makes getting bad grades personal. It's because the teacher is mean or the assignment was just stupid so she shouldn't have to bother with it. She dropped an entry level English class because she didn't like a topic for an essay.
We've been together for 5 years and I think we're just growing apart. I do think our friendship is over and I intend to not speak with her anymore. But this is a livejournal thread so I was just venting.

Ah crap, my last post didn't post.

I'm with Van with the whole welfare thing here in Québec. I don't mean we shouldn't have it, oh no, for those who truly are in need, it's ok (those with physical or mental deficiences or physically wounded after an incident and on their way to try to change their job), but I am against those who use it just because they don't want to work. I've seen such people when I used to work at the Solidarité Social (it's a group that helps and offer food to those on welfare, it's mostly leftovers from supermarket that hasn't rotted yet but that normal consumers think : ooooh, I can't have that). If you are physically able to work, why won't you?
Their main reason : Because the only jobs I can get doesn't pay enough.
And why is it that? Because they have little to no education and in no way they try to amiliorate their situation. They prefer to spend half of what the welfare gives per month in beer and pot than to have a 40 hour job when we so desesperately need workers in the basic fields.

Now, immigration is good, that is true, but if they do not adapt to the society where they immigrate and, instead, try to force their ways onto the majority, it seems rather wrong. It's simple... if you immigrate here, and don't know french, learn it. Otherwise, go to Toronto, Edmonton or Vancouver.
I mean, when I used to work at the IGA in downtown Montréal, we received complains from the people from the china town that we didn't speak cantonnese and that because of that they couldn't ask questions. What the schnout? Should a student who works their to pay his studies know cantonnese just because some immigrants who chose to live here years ago still haven't learned french because they don't do any effort?

I'm not a xenophobist or an extremist, but when I face human stupidity, I have to stand up against it.

I saw Wicked in LA on Wednesday and it was REALLY cool. As a comic book person, continuity is very important to me and they kinda failed on it towards the end but the first act was DEFINITELY amazingly awesome. As my mom put it though, "But they had to have a happy ending!" and I guess so, therefore I'm willing to overlook that. Breathtaking special effects, really funny humor parts, nice writing overall, songs were kinda catchy.

Oh yes, and I just bought 4th ed D&D.

That sucks... and it doesn't sound like she'd do well if you gave her a taste of her own medicine. Maybe at some point she'll realize that she's the one being a poor friend.
