As you may have been able to tell...

Post by Narf the Mouse »

Anyone know of a game I can join? (When did the L5R game get discussed? I seem to have either missed that or completly forgotten that...)

...I'm getting desperate to actually play a RPG. I am currently playing in (You have a choice of): A) None. B) Zip. C) Nada. :( And have been for a while

D&D or Hero System a plus, as is an atmosphere brighter than 'Dark and Gritty'. :)

Also, I'm wanting to give Paranioa a shot, although I'd probably have to buy the book.

Willing to play random free RPGs found on the net.

...And I'll stop before I get to the actual begging.

Sorry man, the L5R game was talked about way back. I think a few months back.

The game was discussed a while back, announced in the forums and discussed in private. Perhaps there was the mistake, though I didn't want to spam overly.

You're quite welcome to join, though I can't promise you it'll be flowers and puppies and stuff I certainly don't go in for the break-'em down style of gameplay.

As a side point, I'm playing in the same games you mention, Narf! (Zip, nada, etc), though I'm running two tabletops and trying to get the hang o' this.

I have a very foggy memory. :)

I'm not sure I'd be able to play a good L5R character, although I'm not sure I wouldn't. Part of that is how much of the game revolves around things like samuri honor duels.

...Basically, to explain, I once read a chapter of 'Usagi Yojimbo'. As far as I could tell, a bunch of people got themselves killed in a battle because they were arrogant idiots, two people who should have been friends ended up enemies over something one of them really should have let go by now - And it left me mostly with a 'What just happened??' feeling. Now, I know the game probably doesn't revolve around duels, but I'm wondering how much of the game has things like that. :)

And, much as I'd normally be willing to try, if I can't grasp my characters' motivations, or at least understand them, I don't have much chance of playing them well. :)

Honour plays a very big part in the game. Loss of honour can be said to be worse than death.

You didn't exactly start with a light book, though, and that is one of the extremes that can be brought about by the clash of ideas, honour and friendship.

While there are duels in this game, there will be intrigue, war, sneakiness and magic as well. The characters, as well as all people, have a variety of motivations that are universal. The difference is it is all conducted under the intense demands placed by an unbending version of honour.

I'd have to buy the book and check out how the game runs before I could say for sure. I don't want to start playing only to find I'm dead weight because I can't get a major part of the setting.

L5R IS a CCG isn't it.

On another note I know what you mean about being out of the gaming. I've been doing jack squat for a while now and am needing my RPG's.

L5R is Both a Card Game and an RPG.

The Card Game is pretty good, although they go through Editions and expansions at a speed on Par with if not Surpasing MtG.

The RPG is great.
Wonderful setting (if you like asian culture at all) with a fun set of Rules.
One thing to note is by and Large Combat is freaking Deadly in this game. One good Roll and you are toast.

And on a Side note.
The Mantis Clan rocks hardcore.

The CCG and RPG are linked, which has generated a curious storyline. The concept is really cool, in that the winner of their tournaments plays a pack that is associated with a clan, and that victory controls part of the RPG storyline... however, in actuality it's led to absurd story contorting through each new happening they use as an event / excuse to bring out a new edition. I toss most of the recent story, as it begins to sound like a mix of Dragonball and a Mills&Boon novel.

Each of the clans rock (and rock hard) in their own way. I've made a point of not playing the same clan twice in the three chances I've had to play and adored each group after catching on to their core.

Narf, seriously, it's as easy and as hard to get into Lot5R clans and samurai as it is to envision being an ork with a mechanical arm, an elf dryad, a jedi knight or a ninja turtle. I'm as likely to beat you over the head with an unyielding set of rules as I am to whack you with a haddock... and I don't like fish.

PS : I agree with Pooka, though... battle can be really lethal!! Game is based of d10s, and a ten explodes (roll again) again and again, without limit. A series of 10s can kill a character in one shot. Graphic, improbably, unlikely, but there. I feel it makes it a little edgier. ;)

Yeah, I probably would be able to get it - But I do want the book first, to make sure. :)

Some things, I'm still working on understanding. Mechanical stuff, for example. Confuses me to nearly no end. :)
