I find that the best cover is saying that the CG server/updater is crapping out. The fact that this is actually often the case helps lend credence!
Hee hee.
For me it's the fact that my scanner often DOES stop working entirely, so I can actually have a handful of comics finished but be completely unable to scan them (which then leads to my not posting them because I want to colour them first... >_> )
Monday is THE best day to update. I think the poll is pretty accurate. I get the most views usually on Mondays and Fridays, with about a fifty percent drop thirty percent drop on Sat. and a fifty percent drop on Sundays. I'm thinking about going to an update schedule of Monday-Friday from now on.

A man after my own heart.
This webcomic, seen here is hosted on the free web host Comic Genesis which pretty much proves its not popular.
Oh noes! Read all about the tormented artist I am!
Yup. Monday would be the day when I get the most traffic.
I don't have an update schedule, as it were. I just post a page whenever I get done. I do, however, try to not go more than seven days without an update. My comic's not great, but I think the fact that I've just kept plugging along, without any long hiatuses or filler art, has slowly increased my readership.
I used to update on Sun., Tues., and Fri. Sunday isn't so bad if the next update isn't until Tuesday, because you still get the Monday views.
My lowest views tended to be Wed. (lowest of all) and Sun., with Saturday not far behind. Now, though, I'm in between comics.
To me, it seemed:
Monday- The top day of the week.
Tuesday- Still decent. It's 3rd place, which could have something to do with the fact that World of Warcraft is down most of the day? Also, UK, Europe, Australia and Asia visits disappear late (because it's Wed).
Wednesday- UGH. No one comes to the site. Sometimes the only visits come in the wee hours of the morning, because it's still Tues. in the West Coast, Alaska and Hawaii.
Thursday- A little slow yet. Often picks up late, because it's Friday in Europe, Australia and Asia.
Friday- Another great day. Begins to slow after 8PM, though.
Saturday- It's slowing, but not nearly as bad as Wed.
Sunday- Ugly until really late, when it's Monday in Europe, Australia and Asia. I have seen it go from 4 visits to 15 visits (not a popular comic by any means) around 7PM Sun. before.
This makes Wed. the best day to make the comic, Thu. to detail it, and Fri. to release it. (I work weekends) Of course, now I don't really track stats anymore.
I update Tuesday, for what is likely a very silly reason. Way back when I started by posting on livejournal I wanted to start on Halloween. Halloween was on a Tuesday. Thus, I now update every Tuesday. When I do an extra page I put it on Friday because that seems to space it out nicely. Simple and silly as that.
Personally I like comics that get uploaded on the weekend. I check so many comics on weekdays that I sometimes miss a few but I usually check all of the weekend comics.
Catabolism: The breaking down of complex chemical substances into simpler ones by the living cells of the body, with the release of energy.
Most people think of it as the beginning of the week, it gives you the weekend to work on stuff and then you've got 5 workdays for people to check it out from their cubicles or school libraries.
A zoo full of cute yet uproariously funny animals...how can you go wrong?
Monday it is then.
Of course, in true comic-maker's fashion, I'm about to miss two updates before I get into the new schedule, due to procrastination. I guess we all fall from grace sometime. You just gotta get back up on that horse and try again. Yup. Put your money on the grace-horse.

People read webcomics the most while they're procrastinating at work or school. So, it'd have to be one of the weekdays. And which weekday are people the most unhappy to be at work or school?
Monday.
I wholly agree with this one! Monday seems the most convenient day for both artist and reader (personal opinion, of course ^_^.) You'll have had the entire weekend to finish up last-minute things as well as people will just be returning to school/work/The Routine... And my own routine starts right there at the computer. "Check mail from the weekend... see what all I need to do for the week... And: Commence procrastination." ...ie... Check all webcomics.
And yeah, everyone said the same thing aside from that - consistent updates are more important than specific day updates. If I check my comics every Monday, after all, it's not going to matter what day they were posted since I'll still see each new one as it developes...
I usually update on Wednesdays ... for the already mentioned reason ...
Wednesday is my 'office day' and it gives me (to my boss' chagrin) the chance to iron out some last minute creases if I didn't have much time that week.

Interesting theory, Liberty cabbage.....lol, and freedom fries....very catchy names there!
I update on a Friday, but i would agree that Monday and Friday seem the most likely for visitors as its the beginning and end of the working week, so people are probably most likely to check then *shrugs*
I agree with Redshine and anyone else that mentioned Hump Day. Middle of the week, everyone has already read the Monday updates and they are bored out of their skull at their cubicle job. So yes, Wednesday. But if you could somehow split up your installment over two or three days, I think you would see your readership go up. Some of the most popular webcomics are daily strips. Maybe a pencilled backstory or storyboard one day and a finished comic entry the next.
