getting started?

Post by ZEDCREATOR »

so...first off, I love Duloch, very clean...eh, heh...

i am a very inexperienced webcomic artist/writer. its been a dream of mine for a while and i just recently started to make a comic because i absolutely didn't have the time to do it.

my first big question is: how do i copywrite my artwork? the sample pic for sign up has to be copywrited...so how do i do that? :o

As I understand it: You made it; you copyrighted it. Now, what your sample pic needs is some sort of copyright notice. Write "copyright (your name)" or something like it somewhere in the image, and you're all set.

Yeah I had some trouple with that too until someone pointed out... um well exactly what Berg pointed out.
A man may fight for many things. His country, his friends, his principles, the glistening ear on the cheek of a golden child. But personally, I'd mud-wrestle my own mother for a ton of cash, an amusing clock and a sack of French porn.

1) Make sure that you upload / connect to comicgenesis and not keenspace. There are still a few links and tutorials that say keenspace, but they are meant to say comicgenesis.

2) To get your comics to be viewed:
  • Make sure that you have a good number of comics to show off, if you want people to read them and come back. At least 20 pages / strips is a good number, but the more the better. If you tell me people "come read my comic" and they do but you only have 3 or 4, then they'll remember that you had no comics and next time they see you advertising, they skip it.
  • In order to get more views you need to let people know about your comic. This will be pretty hard to begin with, but spend a bit of time around different comic-related sites / forums and read some of the information and you'll pick up how to go about it without annoying people.
  • The first thing you should do is to make sure that you have a link in your sig to your comic.
3) A store is a fair bit harder and I wouldn't bother even thinking about one until you have at least 100 pages / strips. Then you will need to have X number of readers who not only like your comic but are willing to pay money for stuff. The number of people that will pay is very, very low so you need a lot of readers.

4) Galleries are a lot easier. Explain what type of galleries you are after and someone can explain it. They are fairly straightforward.

5) What are you uploading to the wiki? It should only be information about your comic and maybe pics of your characters.

If you have specific questions, we can usually help. If you are after general advice, best bet is to read through the tutorials in the Wiki (link in my sig). You should also read Joel Fagin's Webcomic tutorials as there is a load of great information there.

It would suck if someone tried stealing our stuff.

This isn't the OT forum, please don't post if you have nothing useful to add.

By virtue of the fact that you created the art, the art is copywritten. You can, if you like, put a copyright notice on your artwork. But in truth, the chances someone will you steal your work is very small. This is often the very first thing newcomers to CG worry about, but it really should be lower on your list of concerns.

Post by ZEDCREATOR »

okay...second big question is: i did all the fill out stuff for comicgenesis and it has been about 3 weeks with no word back. is that the unofficial "go kick rocks you webcomic wannabe?" or what? should i resubmit under a new email, or use different sample art, is it a problem because its on a blog site, etc? advice from the peanut gallery would be awesome.

thanks all

mike

What? :-?

First thing to do would be to check your email. You should specify a good email address (such as the one your ISP provides, if you have one). There are some email providers that auto-block Comic Genesis emails (such as AOL). You can happily use your personal email address because Comic Genesis does not give out email addresses and it's very rare that you'd actually get a message from Comic Genesis after you've signed up.

Which email provider do you use?

Next, check your spam blockers. The address that you should be adding to your ok list is help@comicgenesis.com (add it to your address book or the allow list). That way you know that the message is getting through to you.

Which emails you should receive: you should get one almost straight away asking you for confirmation. This email has a link that you need to click. This click tells the server that it's the right email address and that you are sure that you want to sign up.

If you don't click that link then your application is deleted after 14 days because the server assumes that you either gave the wrong email address or that you don't want to do a comic anymore.

If you do respond to the first email, you should get a second email around seven days later. That one will have your address, login details and so on.

Comic Genesis is quite open about who is accepted. The only reason that a comic application is rejected (that I know of) is if the author submits work that is obviously not theirs (such as colouring a Dilbert strip and claiming that it's theirs).

If your comic is currently hosted on your blog, then that's perfectly ok. I apologize if you got this impression.

That may be a good idea. If the Comic Genesis emails did not get through to you the first time, try again with a different email address (that you know works). The good news is that you can re-apply with the same name.
