Post by CyberSkull »

Wow, I can't belive that she is not enough of a geek to realize Fruits Basket is only available on DVD and thus comes both subbed and dubbed. Also, I am reasonably sure that only one season was made.

I liked the Pirate Talk version :D

DUDE.
NOT COOL.

You gotta wait longer before pointing out flaws like that, like 6 months longer. Or at least post it deeper in someone else's thread for that day's comic. If you go around making new threads just to nitpick people are going to think you're a troll.

Just pretend its a VHS or a really cheap DVD for now. They exist.

Personally I've watched both and it's one of the few shows where I actually think the dubbed is better than the original. I couldn't stand Yuki and Kyo's voices in the subtitled version. shigure is my personal hero.
This post only vaguely relates to the original point.

Oh relax Tom. I'm not trying to troll or hate on the strip. It's just that one joke out of 100 or so just fell flat to me, and I am saying so. I don't put comics on my daily reading just so I can complain about them.

@ DrunkenPrayer: I like the dub as well. It absolutely shocked me when I saw a good FUNimation dub. ;)

Yeah we are watching Fruits Basket in our anime club right now (thanks to me ^.^ we needed something for the female members). And I forced them to watch an ep. in english and basically said, "if you do not like it being in english we can go back" and unlike most other animes no one has complained.

Ahhhhh Shigure high school girls high school girls all for me high school girls lol

Also maybe it is just me but Tohru annoys me in the sub. and Kyo has a lot more personality in the dubbed.

Sooooo...

I've never watched any anime before. Ever. In my entire short life. Does this make me a foul beast not fit to squirm pathetically on the clean Earth that is Geekland, or am I redeemable?

Essentially, what kind of stuff is good for a newcomers, and what is conidered to be the best of genre?

Dude, its cool, not all Geeks are anime nerds, bro. I even know a few geeks wo loathe anime. Its all good.

PErsonally, I like Full Metal Alchemist, Full Metal PANIC! (and the sequel is funny), and Ghost in the Shell.
I want to look into Record of the Lodoss War, but can't find it at the NEX, and don't speak or read Jspsnese, so going into town to look for it is somewhat out.

If you get the SciFi Channel you might wanna check out Ani-Monday. Every Monday night they air various anime shows during the late evening block. They're currently running Noein at 11 and Tokko at 11:30, both of which I whole-heartedly recommend, but I'd give Street Fighter at midnight and 12:30 a pass. It's pretty lame.

I've heard of full metal alchemist, so I'll have a look at that. Unfortunately I don't get the sci-fi channel, I don't even think you can where I am.

I've heard about something called Akira, anybody recommend it?

I have not heard of that one, but i personally am a fan of Rurouni Kenshin and The Slayers. We get Anime Network up here, so i get to watch a lot, when I have time. Cromartie High is a good one too, bit more gag anime though.

Okay, it's Witch Hunter: Robin. You got the name reversed.

As for Akira, I've seen that movie. Kind of a snooze for the most part. The ending gets pretty wild though. A lot of it didn't make a whole lot of sense to me at the time. It had a kind of Ghost In The Shell feel to it, but older, like it was GITS's father or uncle. You won't be missing much if you give that one a pass.

Well, first of all, even if there's only one season, when it comes out on DVD it's still the "first season". Nobody says "Hey look, I just got the first-and-only season of..." or "the entire original series of..." First Season is just easier to say.

And I'm guessing that Sarah didn't stop to think whether the DVD has both subbed and dubbed versions, because she was probably just having the same knee-jerk reaction that most people do who are extremely anti-dubbing... "oh look, it's your favourite anime" "IS IT SUB-TITLED??" Abby didn't bother to explain that the DVD has both... she was too busy making fun of Sarah. She's such a smart-ass! ;-)

For someone that's never watched any anime I'd reccomend:
1) Full Metal Alchemist - I avoided this because of the hype but it's a great show.
2) Yu-gi-oh The Abridged Series - You can watch this online at the official website, basically it's just the actual show condensed into episodes of ten minutes or less but the guy changes the voices and it's hilarious.
3) Bleach - I've not watched the dubbed episodes yet but the fansubs are good and realtively easy to find. Give it a few episodes before you make up your mind because it can take a while to get into.
4) Love Hina - More light hearted than FMA or Bleach and probably one of the more famous harem comedies around.

Basically I just tried to pick three that give an overview of the different genres out there so you can get and idea of what you prefer personally I prefer action and love comedies.

I have not seen much anime, but I did see a pretty great movie titled Cowboy Bebop. I am pretty sure nearly anyone would like that film. I also saw a series that was pretty good, but I cannot remember the title... I just remember vampires, and a main character toat wore a red coat, a rather large hat, and usually sun glasses...
My name made sense when I first thought it up.

I apologize in advance for the inevitable awkwardness.

Anime?!? ANIME?!?! ooooh one of my favorite subjects :shucks:
There are lots of anime series out there that are good, it all depends on your taste of shows, there is a series for just about every genre out there.

Some of my favorites are (in no particular order):
Sailor Moon
Ranma 1/2
Tenchi Muyo
Martian Successor Nadesico
Bakuretsu Tenshi
Tsukiyumi ~ Moon Phase
Mai Hime & Mai Otome
Love Hina
Akira
Ghost in the Shell
Armitage the Third
and soooooo many more to list (suddenly feels old) I've been collecting and watching anime for 12yrs now (YIKES!!)

Hellsing! That is it. Thanks, Narf! And to Chibiyuri, feeling a little old is probably not quite as awkward as having no idea what people on this board are talking about most of the time, yet still feeling a small connection to them. =P
