whats the protocol for cameos?

For discussions, announcements, non-technical questions and anything else comics-related or otherwise that doesn't fit in any of the other categories.

I'd say, always ask (unless you're very close to the artist). And of course, as was already stated, include credits and links to the original creator.
I just want to throw out, don't expect a big reaction. Some artists will be thrilled and will tell you. Others may be thrilled and not say anything, just be too busy, or (hopefully not) just didn't like it. When you do a cameo, do it because you want to, or because you're a fan of the strip and you'll be doing fine.
------------------

Very few people ask you if they can cameo your character or not. It's much more fun if they don't. But it's also in good taste to at least notify them a day or so in advance if you're gonna use one of their characters. I speak from experience. SporkMan cameos are something like Keenspace legends these days. And the notifying in advance part is good because authors like me can give you mad linkage if even the tiniest cameo slips into your strip.
Ah, I love cameos. I thrive on them. They're my life blood. Sad, really.
------------------

Hmmm... no Shadows.
And how'd I get back to Space?
A new mystery...
So, John T hasn't spotted (forgive the pun) Sporkman's cameo at the Keenvention. Heheheh...
Although I prefer to call it taunting more than actually cameoing...
And I normally announce the same day if I'm cameoing someone, and I always take great glee if they notice...
Dark Knight http://dk.keenspace.com/

The trick to doing a good cameo is to make sure to get my characters right.
Harhar.
I say you notify them afterwards if it's just a cameo but if you make a full-blown joke out of it you might as well E-Mail them. Remember anything 75 years old is no longer copyrighted so a cameo would be a perfect time to pull a time travel storyline. Dust Puppy vs. Bun-Bun in 2090!!!!
------------------

That is, everybody agreed except Damonk. But he's a well-known crank, so I just said the hell with it, and did a Framed! cameo anyway.
I'll wager that most cartoonists are tickled to get a cameo (certainly I would be!), and while they would probably not mind it being unannounced, I would say that asking permission is good form It's not an absolute necessity, as long as the characters you cameo aren't acting terribly out of character. And, as other people have mentioned, toss the cameoed strip a link.
On the other hand, if they're liable to hunt you down while wielding a big stick, let them know, man!
------------------

I don't mind if they ask permission or not, I just want them to tell me so I can link them.
Notice how I use the word me a lot.

Hmmm....
The one time I did a cameo where the character was actually doing stuff, I asked Mr. Troutman if he'd mind Sporky showing up to deal with some nefarious lawyers.
The rest of the time, I've used little bits of stuff as background art (like the bottoms of snowboards and pictures) I usually haven't asked because I wasn't doing it to pump up my page hits or anything. I was doing it for my amusement and maybe to amuse the one or two readers who catch the reference. I think Butch on the bottom of a snowboard during the Framed!!! crossover was my favorite.
I guess my philosophy is if the cameo is important to the strip, definately ask and link to the originators site. If it's just a neato "freebie", don't worry about it.

------------------
