I based Troy Alexander, the autistic boy that Lorelei had a crush on in the "Siege Mentality" storyline, on my eldest son who died when he was sixteen. The rages, the biting himself when his endomorphins kicked in, the shyness, were all there. He died a tragic death, although my real son's death was more random---an embolism.

Sometimes you have to exorcise the demons. Lorelei's reaction to Troy's death was the same as mine. So cold...

It was shock of course. Medical shock, not the shock of the unexpected.

I have a couple of interesting points on this one (that will, unfortunately, sound really self-pitying).

Firstly, about five and a half years ago (seems like so much less than that...), I was the victim of a minor stabbing in high school. Earlier this year, I quite deliberately inflicted a serious injury (much more serious than the one I recieved, but in roughly the same place) on my lead character. The real-life incident was invaluable for my understanding of Mike's reaction to the fictional one. Regrettably, I did not benefit from the magical healing ability of one of my companions the way Mike did >_<

Secondly, very recently, I developed an anxiety disorder and for a weekend felt unable to interact with my flatmates. I literally cowered in my room with a sign on the door saying 'please leave me alone'. Needless to say, my flatmates, who are all good friends of mine, were less than obliging, and several times knocked on my door to ask if I was alright (I still maintain that 'are you alright?' is a stupid question to ask in that situation - equivalent to the dozens of people who asked after the stabbing incident 'did it hurt?' Of course it did, of course I'm not alright), completely ignorant of the fact that this was giving me panic attacks. I reviewed the script of the current chapter of my comic that weekend and remembered that I'd written a page where one character disturbs another who (suffering from PTSD) is hiding himself away in his room, and said something like 'because people who want to be alone usually need to be not alone' (the original phrasing was pithier, but is lost to the aether now). This, of course, was changed quickly to 'because I'm in a pushy mood and I want to know what's up'. I didn't mean this as a dig at those friends, but as a comment on the general mentality about people who say they want to be alone not being left alone. I recognise that often people who say they want to be alone don't, but I don't think it's the sort of thing I'd ever do. I did accompany the page in question with a bit of a rant about this, too (I apologised at the end of it...)

I think it would be great if some of the things in my comic, suddenly just occured. as I tend to takes bits and pieces from real life, but nothing is fully one or the other.

Were I do another genre that I'd love to take a crack at eventually, the buddy comic, I'd most likely make most of the comic based on real life events and conversations.

Originally, much of the characters were inspired by composites of me and some close friends. However, they've largely begun to take on a life of their own. Still though, much of what happens in the strip is often inspired by my life. For instance, when one of my characters got piss drunk over a girl it's becuase that's exactly what I felt like doing becuase my own issues with the fairer sex.
