Hannukah/Hanukkah/Channukah/Chanukkah/etc. is a minor holiday in Judaism. The major holidays are all mentioned in the Bible or have a book related to them (Purim, Book of Esther). Minor ones are everything else, including Hannukah.Linkara wrote:Actually from what I've heard, Hannukah is more of a minor holiday in comparison to another one (Yom-Kipper? Someone who's Jewish want to help me here? ^^;; )that's not exactly around the same time as Christmas, so it was kind of disrespectful of trying to draw more attention to Hannukah than the other one.
And I for one get a lot of religious enjoyment out of the birth of my savior, thank ya very much. ^^
The only, ONLY reason Hannukah is so well known is because it happens to fall near Christmas most of the time. Because of that, it's gotten major publicity and is well known. The gift giving aspect probably got borrowed for the Gentiles, and that made it become a more memorable holiday than say Tu B'Shevat which is basically Jewish Earth Day and involves planting trees. I'd say an arguably more important holiday, but whatever.
As far as the really really important two major we're-taking-off-work-even-if the-project-is due-in-5-hours-and-for-kicks-not-eat-anything-for-24-hours holidays? The High Holy Days, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
Okay...enough of that. Back on track.
