The only things that need to be taken seriously are life and death situations. At the moment they're happening. Once it's over and there's nothing anyone can do about it, then they're free game as well.

About 9/11. I was horrified, shocked, and pissed when I heard the news. But you know what, I've seen some really really funny jokes made about the incident, and I'll admit they were funny. It doesn't make the incident any less hideous, and it doesn't mean I don't care about what happened. But humor is humor. I suppose some people find certain jokes 'in bad taste', but I've found that the easiest way to not get upset is to just not get offended by much. Saves on the stress too. So many people nowdays are stressed out about everything and they just won't let it go.

But there is a limit. It's mainly on knowing where and when to tell what jokes. I don't think there's any jokes that are totally out of bounds. I just think there are some times when you just shouldn't make certain jokes. But this is out of respect for others more than it is about the joke itself.

Humor is the best way to deal with horrible things though. In fact, whenever I tell someone about something bad that happened to me, it generally starts with, "Want to hear a funny story?"

I wouldn't put sex jokes in the same category as toilet jokes. Man is a sexual creature and sexual jokes, if done well, can show a different side of what we consider big themes.

I create my comic primarily to entertain, so pushing the limits of "good taste" or whatever you want to call it isn't really on the agenda because i try to stick to the things i find funny and the thing which certain friends of mine, who i know read the comic, would find funny. I write for their enjoyment. I'm not really sure where that puts my limits.

Of course what pisses me off is when a friend repeats it like an hour later and I dont get any of the credit :shifty:

Man is also a creature that poops. And I'm talking about cheap dirty jokes...not humor that happens to touch on sex/relationships or something.

Religious jokes and sexual jokes can be very funny. Particularly when you hear clergy tell them.

It's impossible to pinpoint when a joke is of bad taste until you hear the joke, until you feel it go over the line. It's not a case of subject matter: some of the best jokes revolve around what we all should take very seriously, death. Perhaps we'd be more peaceful if we all tiptoed around each other, trying hard not to offend anyone (a tall order indeed), but we'd also be less human. We laugh about the serious things because sometimes that's all you can do.

Humor represents a lot of things. It's not simply about entertaining people. Adult and adolescent humor are entertaining. Few things are funnier than a cleverly timed fart during sex. That's good, but not everything

Also, it enables us to go through serious crises without going crazy. Making light of a situation enables people to bear it. The most serious circumstances are those that people feel a need to joke about the most. Humor enables people to think about things that need to be thought about while keeping the stress involved in thinking about those things at a manageable level.

What's the point of taking things too seriously? You end up losing sleep and wasting time at the doctor checking out your ulcers. That's no way to get a problem solved.

I read a story about a guy that was laughing about how his army buddy took a shit on a land mine by accident and blew up. When asked about how he can laugh at something horrible like that, he said he had or he'd go insane and kill himself.

My mom laughs whenever I get really, really pissed off at her. This just makes me even angrier, livid, in fact, but she does it because she kind of can't handle how angry I am. We laugh because it's a release, and everyone needs one of those.

I think that in practice, limit is defined by situation. For example, I love those dead baby jokes... but I would never, *ever* tell one to my grandparents. In a comic I think the limit is defined by your subject matter, I mean, like with Dutch, trying to be "kid friendly" or not, a strong sexual joke would just *not* fit into School Spirit. But that same joke wouldn't cross any lines at all in a different comic.

That's really one of the major lines I won't cross: I won't tell "adult" jokes in front of kids, nor will I swear in front of them, and I try not to do stuff like smoke in front of them. Kids are impressionable and I don't want their parents hunting me down.

I make jokes about anything I find to be funny. Sometimes I think I'm edgy or in the realm of bad taste. Some of the comics I've done, like my QC parody, I think are just mean in retrospective, though some people find them funny.

But if you ever think you are edgy, watch Sarah Silverman do stand-up. Sometimes I'm not sure I'm laughing at her jokes because they are funny or because they are horrible.

Whether it is one or the other doesn't really matter as it breaks down taboos. Taboos are all really silly and we should be able to have open dialogue about sex, politics, gender, religion and race. Humour can be an enabler, but that's only if the person making the jokes has some substance to back it up.

Whilst at the same time producing one of the most wildly entertaining comics I've ever read. I'd say Princess is on to something.
