Roller Coaster

Post by Smorris »

So I wanted to draw one of my characters on a roller coaster for a strip. I thought about the best way to show it, looked at a few references images and made a few sketches. The hardest thing to get right was the perspective.

So.. how'd I do?

I think it came out quite nicely. It conveys the motion of the scene without compromising simplicity. Well done!

The guy in the middle is either really huge or floating way up in the air. If he's supposed to be standing on the ground and of similar size to the folk riding the coaster, he needs to be smaller than the guys in the back car of the coaster.

I'm with Stupid ^

To add, I like the use of angles. Very dramatic.

Hee, feel free to think of me as a pedantic ass. :)

Anyway, the size of the rails relative to the 'camera' is a bit funny.

Image

Those two points vary with their distance to the 'camera', but the gaps are pretty much the same. Maybe you can try extending the vertical part of the rail a bit so the distance is more exagerrated?

Also, the size of the boy's head compared to his distance from the guys in the rollercoaster is a bit weird to me.

But yeah, it looks awesome. I'm just too picky. ;)

You guys are definitely right about dude in the middle. I'll probably shrink him down in photoshop.

mmm... I'm not really sure what you mean. There's a couple things I'm noticing now that you're drawing attention there, such as the width of the rails, the gap between them and the height of the trestles.

That may end up being tough to fix, I imagine. But good to know where I went wrong for next time.

Thanks, people. This helps alot. :)

Whoa, that is one perfect 90 degree angle - I think that's the biggest thing. I've been on a LOT of roller coasters in my life, but that's the straightest coaster I've ever seen. I think you could just angle the bottom part a little downwards and it would look a lot more realistic.

That's pretty close to what I was gonna say.

Wow, Jakkal. You definitely did a google search and found the exact same reference photo that I used. :)

I never did a second look after finishing the drawing -- looks like I made the perspective alot more extreme, and ended up with that unnatural 90 degree angle.
