O.o

Elric...?

That's always been like the Lyle Lovett x Julia Roberts thing for me... (before there was a Lyle Lovett x Julia Roberts thing, of course)

The character always struck me (from a tasteful distance) as this pathetic, whining, self-pity-absorbed putz. And girls would just -cream-. And I couldn't decide whether to say "And -that- is why I'm a lesbian." or "Fuck... Do you have to change it's diapers, too?"
"We cross our bridges when we come to them and burn them behind us, with nothing to show for our progress except a memory of the smell of smoke, and a presumption that once our eyes watered...."

O Canada
Our home and native land
True patriot love
In all thy sons' command
With glowing hearts
We see thee rise
The true North strong and free
From far and wide, O Canada
We stand on guard for thee
God keep our land
Glorious and free
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

I could post it in French, too, but I'm having issues getting the accents to work.

Have you ever READ the books? Christ.. there is some fucking BLOODSHEAD in those things, and while Elric is a bit on the broody side, he kicks ass, takes names, and gives the finger to the very lords of Chaos.

issues getting the accents to work.
Well, I'd been meaning to redo this for a while, having lost my previous copy and acquired a need for more than ñ, ü, and vowels with accent aigu, so might as well post it here while I'm at it. This has some German and Spanish characters, b/c I use them too (in fact, my facility with the languages goes English, Spanish, French, German, a couple of non-Indo-European languages of various types of which I know about half a dozen words each)

Ç =Alt+ 128
ç =Alt+ 135
ß =Alt+ 225
ñ =Alt+ 164
Ñ =Alt+ 165
ü =Alt+ 129 (I can't remember if this is in French, but it's in Spanish, which I use a lot more fluently. I don't have enough German to bother with the other umlauts; and since it's only used in Spanish after a g, I don't need the uppercase)

â =Alt+ 131
ê =Alt+ 136
î =Alt+ 140
ô =Alt+ 147
û =Alt+ 150

á =Alt+ 160
é =Alt+ 130
í =Alt+ 161
ó =Alt+ 162
ú =Alt+ 163
(I use the Aigu a lot more b/c that's the one you use in Spanish)

à =Alt+ 133
è =Alt+ 138
ì =Alt+ 141
ò =Alt+ 149
ù =Alt+ 151

Couldn't find most of the caps

Ä =Alt+ 142
Å =Alt+ 143
Æ =Alt+ 146 (useful for transliterating Norse mythology, I guess)

É =Alt+ 144 (now that's useful)

Thank you http://www.asciitable.com

My online names have been many and varied. I've had various con names too; used to have a different one every year. Only one I remember was Penelope (had a BF who was out of town for an extended period--didn't work, BTW; It's actually the only time I've ever "cheated" except he never came back anyway, so it doesn't exactly count).

My alias here is the taxonomic order to which bats belong, because I like bats. It's also a reference to Blood: The Last Vampire, which is one of my favorite animes.

I have had not one but two nicknames based on my exceptionally poor sense of direction. The last time I was in college, it was Ryoga. Now one of my gaming buddies calls me Janeway.
Edited for pickiness.

Eh, don't get me wrong, I'm not going to defend the "zOMG ANGST" of most of Moorecock's work. But, I like the stories, I liked the characters(bagage and all) and I like the whole "Eternal Champion" mythos.

I like the idea that, now matter what, there's at least one guy whose job it is to try and fix some shit, whether he succeeds or not. It's nice to know that, somewhere, somebody else is bummed all this shit's going down too, whether he or she can fix it or not, Y'Know?

(As for whiny, emo, fruitcakes, read the Corum novels. Jesus... at least Elric has the balls to go out on a big note, fucking Corum heaves to from a racquetball to the head from the girl he's banging and pissess off with a whimper. *NOTE* The above is spoilerized for your protection. It's also not to be taken literally or internally.)

I guess for me, I was more into that kind of stuff as a girl, than the disgusting display of the romantic novel genre my girlfriends filled their mind with. I know there are other genres, I just never got out of my morbid curiosity phase.

A few favorites as a teen:
Jack L Chalker - Soul Rider Series
Michael Moorecock - Elric of Melnibone Series
Anything to do with Vlad Tepes, Countess Bathory or Al Capone,
Original Grimms and Hans Christian Anderson
Anything Arthurian or Celtic Mythos (that was enough romance for me)
Stephen R Donaldson - The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever
Robert Asprin's Myth Series

When I was touring with the highland pipe band as a drummer, my nickname was "Skeeter." Mostly because the pipe major could never remember my name (how hard is "Lee" or "Shelley"?) and introduced me to every new person as "Skeeter." So the name stuck, hard. I gave up and started labelling all my gear with that name, just because it was more likely to get back to me that way.

First online account was "sidhe." That only lasted about a year, because I got tired of trying to deal with americans who can't pronounce irish words ("shee!, not sid-hee"). I went through a couple different online names, Silverlock because my hair really does grow in white in streaks. That was way cool until I turned 30...but I had to mangle it to make it fit the original 7-character limit on account names, so after some thought I picked "clueles."

I'd gotten tired of clueless users writing me in the middle of the night when I was trying to get programming work done. Middle of the night was the only time the system load was light enough to compile things, and if you were on that late, it was assumed you were a bad-ass hacker and could fix any mess said stupid user had created. I figured that no one would ask Stupid User Questions of an account named "clueles," so I was home free. It worked. So well that one of the other student consultants almost made me duel him for the name. He finally gave up and took "noclues" instead. And it was absolutely glorious nuking someone in a usenet flame war from my "clueles" account. Because sooner or later, some lamer would have to insult my account name because they couldn't think of a better argument. Yay, that's when I got to squash them like a bug.

For professional stuff, I've had to use my actual name. For online fora, I started using "Jackalope" at Internet Infidels originally. I wanted something mythical and ridiculous and the Jackalope is what came to mind.
Image

I've also got a gmail account, and trying to find a name that wasn't taken already was a real bitch. Until I remembered one of my joke websites: The Scotch Fairies. That started out at a convention, where my husband, a friend and I wandered around the party floor with a bag full of single malts and some shot glasses and gave impromptu scotch tastings. "Who are you guys?" "We're the Scotch Fairies!"
Image

Just this week, I started redrawing some of the Scotch Fairy artwork. I've gotten a whole lot better with Illustrator since I did those first sketches.

Mmm.. I've been to a bad convention or two that could've used some scotch fairies... I don't even like scotch and I'd appreciate the scotch fairies at certain cons. Though if I had a choice I'd love to get a visit from the Rum Fairies... Mmm... rum...

PS I really dig the scotch fairy pictures. They rock my ride.

Yeah, I agree with Awkward, those Scotch Fairies as awesome.

I'd like to meet up with Irish Single Malt Whiskey Fairies personally...

It's the PGGB gremlins and Romulan Ale trolls you have to avoid.

Pretty much any sort of <alcohol> [item/creature/mythological thing] would be apprecated at any con.

Personally, I've run across the Rum-o-pus, the Beer Badger, and some guy in a banana costume with a bottle of Yukon Jack.

I love the label on the Scotch Fairy drawing - for the life of me I can't pronounce Laphroaig, which is bloody pathetic for someone of Scottish heritage.

I saw a masquerade entry one year that was the giant pink elephant with a martini glass. What happens when Master Class costumers get bored...

Yup. That was part of the joke. And I didn't want to use any one particular scotch brand.

It's not related in any way to events similar to the one described in Awkwardschoolgirl's "Amusing Anecdote" thread, is it? *hopeful*
