Pleasure, however, can be expressed in a single picture (no, not goatse.cx), and that would be found here.

Good point. It's a fascinating crisis, on several levels; the Norwegian republication of the Danish editorial cartoons only served as the proximate cause. (Cartoons can be a serious medium, but damn...!) It's very reminiscent of chaos theory; extremely large perturbations can arise from the most trivial causes. And now the Iranians have announced a Shoah cartoon contest. Figures.

How hypersensitive do we have to be again?

Oy frickin' vey. How self-centered can they be? Really! So it's blasphemous in their religion, ay? So I guess that means they won't be making their own cartoons of Mohammed any time soon. Fair enough. But seeing as their very worship of their god is blasphemous to, say, Jews and Christians (that whole "Thou shalt not kiss any arse before mine" commandment thingy...) they really shouldn't be saying that blasphemy by non-believers (and ones in different countries, no less) should be punishable by death. Hell, these guys make Jack Chick look like an even-tempered, fully rational human being!

Much as I have sympathy for those harmed by rioting idiots, the idea of rioting over a comic seems so ridiculous to me that it isn't fully registering in my mind as real. Be careful Ghastly, they might come after you next if they ever find that comic you drew of Mohammed screwing his 9-year-old wife in the missionary position for the sole purpose of procreation

You've gotta give these people some credit, though. They, at least, are true to their concepts of their religion. They believe their version of God is correct, and thus no other is, and so everyone who believes in some other version of God is wrong. It's really just honesty. They expect everybody, even those of other religions, to follow their religious doctrines because they truly believe theirs to be factually correct. If every religious person followed through on their convictions like these people, then people just might start to see how ridiculous their beliefs truly are, and we could eradicate religion entirely within the next ten years!

I think the muslim world has just been so wrapped up in regional politics and so far removed from the minds of the rest of the world for so long that they're not used to outside attention, much less critical attention. That and there's been so much conflict in the region that a stirring up a little more doesn't take much effort. If you isolated a population of christians and allowed their clerics to have a large deal of control over local politics for generations, and then suddenly showed them all GGC's take on jesus, I suspect you'd create an uproar as well (in other words, keep this comic out of sight in Utah  ). The rise of secular governments did wonders for mellowing out christians, I suspect it'll happen in the middle east as well, if and when they're integrated in to the international community.

I have a friend here in Hamilton who is from Pakistan and has an actual honest to Allah fatwa on his head. He's hiding here in Hamilton because, well, if you're a good Muslim you're supposed to kill this man the instant you see him. Why? Because he dared to write a book saying that for the most part the problems the middle east face are caused by the middle east and that blaming the west and blaming the US and blaming the Jews and blaming the Christians is just the Arab Muslim's way of trying to protect their pride.

Basically the Arab Muslim world can't deal with the fact that they are no longer the technological, military, and culturally elite empire they once were and instead of examining what went wrong and figuring out how to evolve to fit into a modern world they're getting angry, throwing a hissy fit and trying to convince progressive Muslims around the world to join them in their holy temper tantrum. The sad thing is they're doing a pretty good job of this. Everytime the US bombs or shoots someone in the Middle East a progressive Muslim becomes sympathetic to the backwards, hatefilled jihadist in the middle east whose convincing children to turn themselves into landmines.

That's a big part of the problem right there. Old men and women turning the hope for their better future, their very own children, into improvised explosive devices. Sickening. Absolutely sickening.

The fact that so much disgusting behaviour has been carried out for so many centuries by people claiming to be the early representations of god's will convinces me more than anything else that either god doesn't exist or, if it does exist it doesn't know or doesn't care about what's going down here on earth.

You can bet your ass if people went around blowing shit up, spreading distruction and misery all in MY name I'd be screaming non-stop that those sick fucks have absolutely nothing to do with me and what I believe in. If god has neither the power nor the will to actively stop such carnage then god is quite simply not desrving of my worship nor my respect.

Actually, this little gem is much closer to the type of blasphemy that the muslims are complaining about. It insults Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, the orignal temple at Nauvoo, Angel Moroni's golden plates, the magic temple underwear, the secret "adamic" language, and one of the major elements of the Temple Endowment Ceremony. It could only have been drawn by an ex-mormon. Oh, and it's a beer label.

The second beer label was also the product of ex-mormons and continues the theme of blasphemy by quoting the Book of Mormon and includes a photo of mormons making the "secret" temple sign and showing everyone how doofy it really looks. Along with the parody of the translation of the "adamic" utterance.

Neither artist has been murdered or even threatened, which would suggest that even the Mormons have outgrown their "blood atonement" phase. Scientology, on the other hand...
(I think I'm still listed as a Supressive Person for bringing posterboard and markers to a protest back in the mid-90s, it made me an "organizer")

The only two people that would say "yes," while not purely for the Chibi reason, are Freddy and Kwerki. So, no. "Outlook not so good."

Can anybody explain the "magic underwear" thing to me? I don't know any Mormons and I've heard it mentioned here and there on the Web, but never any concrete explanation of what it is.
