Thanks. And if it's any consolation, I often take middle ground.Escushion wrote:See, this is why I don't like arguing with McDuffies, a preference I've never listed before, but you all should blend into your memories at this time. I want to be on his side.

mcDuffies: It looks like we agree on a number of points. The issue is that you're using "Help Me' thread to get on a soapbox about things in general without realizing that this is one of those rare situations where someone has bothered to think it through. There's anumber of conversations I've had with others, in order to test the waters, and have discussed with a number of people with a lot of experience, down to what buttons to include and not include.
It's the catch of: I appreciate the advice, but I've already told it others, and now I'm getting back what I've already told...Weird that...
Ghastly: Writing well is also time-intensive. So is PR, web design, maintaining the business side, and doing all the less-than-fun about building a webcomic. Not trying to be a jerk, but I've put just as much effort into just getting things ready and maintaining as the artist will do drawing.
Also, I appreciate the issue re: profit-sharing. That's why I try to make everything run smooth, have things ready, and make the project as interesting as I can. I know it's running things cheaply, but I need the artist to know that it will be fun (or at least interesting), and that the comic will be worth including in their portfolio.
(Side Note: I'm working to help get two studios off the ground (one is a collective, the other is someone else's, and one of the artists I'm working with is Katie Sweet, of Juathuur. Also, keep in mind that established doesn't necessarily mean established here; I'm pretty well-known outside of here...(Something I should have allowed for as well)...Just pointing out that the scripts have been pretty well picked over by people not me...]
Also, I'm aware that the limited compensation is an issue as well as the rather poor writer:artist; however, if you need help, you can't get it if you don't ask (cf: lottery tickets and God). So...I plug away anyway...
Re: The non-drawing: I do dabble, but I'd prefer to do the best I can do, and that means attempting to bring in someone who can do it well. I've even been helping some illustrators get better at what they do if I think it's worth it, and helping others learn to write.
All others: Sorry; I just hate the general discrimination re: writers and it tends to give the artistic equivalent of Little Person's Attitude...Go figure....

Just saw this thread today... This guy's using my name!
Seriously, Finbar, I don't think people are discriminating. Most of the people here write and draw comics, and they're just basing their arguments off their own experience.
Really, have you met Netpoet? He writes for Tales of a Traveling Gnome, and I don't think anyone here would ever look down on him. He's part of the family. A few of the reasons you're getting so much beef is because 1) you started a spammish thread that everyone's seen before and 2) you started arguing with the most proficient debater here (McDuffies).
Recently, I've started a collab project of my own, and I'll agree that it is much more difficult to write for an artist other than yourself. I've found myself making most of the mistakes McDuffies mentioned. Rookie mistakes, really, but I do them all the same.
Really, I'd suggest working with your own artistic skills. They're not bad. Around here, a comic doesn't have to be perfect to be respected. Also, drawing your own for a while might help you gain a little perspective on where some of these guys (Ghastly in particular) are coming from.
Whatever happens, I wish you best of luck with it.

Not me!Black Sparrow wrote:Just saw this thread today... This guy's using my name!![]()
Keep in mind that that my first love is movies; writers tend to get the short end of the stick. Also, it seems that the heirarchy goes: 1) W/I, 2) I, 3) W...Seriously, Finbar, I don't think people are discriminating.
1) Like I said: I knew it was sorta an irritating question, but, like I said, I figured I may as well ask...Like I said, lottery tickets and God...A few of the reasons you're getting so much beef is because 1) you started a spammish thread that everyone's seen before and 2) you started arguing with the most proficient debater here (McDuffies).
2) I like a good fight, being Irish and all that...It's been fun!
I definitely appreciate where these guys are coming from; it took me almost six hours to get that piece where I was reasonably happy with it. I do keep a sketchbook, but I don't do as much drawing as I should; I'm busy scrambling for money right, so I just don't get as much practice in as I should. Besides, I have much more fun with my writing...Really, I'd suggest working with your own artistic skills. They're not bad. Around here, a comic doesn't have to be perfect to be respected. Yeah, it was all a good arguement... I draw a line only when the other guy starts using insults, which wasn't the case here.
Yeah... In films, once the writer handed down the scripts, he has no control over it and director and producer are free to make whatever they want out of it... In comics, prominent figures like Moor, Geyman, Jodorovsky (or in webcomics T.Campbel, Graveyard Greg, Chris Crosby) are pulling most of the strings. I guess, every industry finds the model that works most productive for it and, with comics, it turned out that the model where writer is responsible of the content and artist is illustrating it, is the one. Not neccesarily the best one, but the most productive one.[/quote]Keep in mind that that my first love is movies; writers tend to get the short end of the stick. Plus, some of us spend our weekends raising blind orphans singlehandedly as well.

Well, it's not like they can wander very far, what with them being blind and all.
Faith is what credulity becomes when it finally achieves escape velocity from the constraints of terrestrial discourse- reasonableness, internal coherence, civility, and candor. Thus, the men who commited the atrocities of September 11 were neither cowards nor lunatics of any sort, but Men of Faith- perfect faith- and this, it must finally be acknowleged, is a terrible thing to be.
