New Newsbox Signup
Hi.
The guy who draws Cortland showed how to make your own newsbox thing, so I'm starting one available to all Keenspacers who want in. All you have to do is post a public (make it a banner) link to a 150 x 300 .gif, the url to your comic, and post the newsbox code on your main site (screenname.keenspace.com).
The code to post is:
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://plotlessviolence.keenspace.com/n ... "></script> somewhere in your <Head> section
and
<script type="text/javascript"> displayAd(); </script> where you want it to show
If you don't put the code on your main site, you will be removed.
The relevant difference between this and a real newsbox is that whoever's ad shows up is random with a probability of 1/number members each, whereas the old newsbox (I think) gave your image a higher probability of showing up the more you updated and the more popular your site was. But the benefit of this is that it uses the same urls/banners as the old Keenspace newsbox, so it'll work as an interim solution.

If you feel like going all out on this then I'd recommend you make two seperate newsboxes, one for lower rated comics and one for higher.
A lot of G and PG comics don't want to be linked to R and X comics and R and X comics don't want to have to censor their image design for the benefit of lower rated comics.

It's up and working, I, like your mom, just need members.
As far as ratings go, this will be the universal dropdown. Utah may have just gotten its first computer, but that doesn't mean they get to edit the internet accodring to their whims. Someone else can make the G-rated dropdown.

yeah, well, look at his site rants. he likes uncalled for.
heres my attempt.
I refuse to sign up for unmoderated newsboxes like this, because there are huge piles of shittyness on the internet, with horrendous art and no concept of image composition, and i dont want it on my site. huzzah!

Maybe your mom has her own newsbox dropdown ring.
I mean, COME ON! I wrote out "...need more members" and it just hit me. When was I going to get the opportunity to make that momma joke again?
Well so much for this idea. I mean, purgatory, IT'S WORKING! It's on my site, working fine, available to every single person who wants to join and I can't get a single person to join because everyone apparently believes he was born immaculately?
And, Shiny: "moderated?!?" I can at least delete those with hardcore nudity in the .gif or sprite comics that would make me potentially liable for copyright infringement if I advertised them (read up on Derivative Works, kids: Copyright is lasts "Forever minus a day" and encompasses every feasible use of feasible technology; there is no more Fair Use). You think the old Newsbox was moderated? You think the new one will be?
I guess we'll all have to wait until the official newsbox is running again. Oh, well, they'll code it someday.

Wow.
Thank you for going to all this effort, but:
1) You did an asshole thing by insulting someone for no good reason when they made a very, very reasonable statement.
2) that reasonabe statement is that those of us who run G and PG comics (of which I am one) probably don't want R and X rated comics advertised on their site. I know of at least two grade school classes that have visited after posing questions for me to answer.
3) I don't know you, and I am a little cautious about running a script from your site on mine.
4) Wow, you were a jackass earlier in this thread. I know this is a repeat of #1, but woah.
Good luck to you.

No,i dont expect the new newsbox will be moderated. and while i think it SHOULD be, this means i have about as much wish to have it on the site as i do yours.
Regardless. i have some standards (not too high, but they are there) about what i will put on my site. For an example, the art in plotless violence would not meet them, and i really dont want my readers to think i somehow endorse the shit that appears in my old comics newsbox all the time.
anyway, no offence, but if i was gonna have it, then why would i put one run by some, erm, well, basically a nobody in the comics world, when i could have the official KS one and get a decent readership? im sure as damnit not putting 2 of them on my site.

If your site is rated as PG on the guide, then the normal newsbox won't show any ads from a comic which is rated higher than PG.phactorri wrote:How exactly is this diffrent than the normal newsbox?rkolter wrote:Wow.

I took a look at the code for the newsbox... If you replaced the random seed generator with a date/time call and set up a two dimensional array and an if/else statement (or even just had 31 or few comics in a one dimensional array), you could have the thing set up to run so everyone would get a single day in the spotlight, er news box.
Plotlessviolence: if you really want members, you?ll have to make the box Web-14 rated.
Why? Just because most of us happen to be web-14 (and under) rated.
Not that there is any thing wrong the occasionally NC 17 *grins devilishly*, there just aren?t as many of them.

Upon reflection, a well designed if/else statement would probably work just fine for making a "comic a day" news box
And I liked the "yo-mamma" joke. Yes it was not the time or place for it, but as "yo-mamma" jokes go, it was wtill a good one.
Then again, I?m amazingly hard to insult, despite being highly argumentative.

Hmmm... That is tempting.... I?ll have to dig out my JavaScript book, but it shouldn't be to hard.
Tell you guys what. since Plotlessviolence came up with this whole board (and I hate to see a board go to waste) I?ll get cracking on a Complexified Web 14 newsbox on Monday. If I fail to build it, I?ll just try for the Web-14 randomizer.
Maybe Plotlessviolence will still host a free-for-all Newsbox, so no one will be left out .
Dose that appease everyone?

Do me a favor and never PM me stuff like this:
Oh, and by what I said. I meant you've done nothing but acted like a jerk and insulted others. That is not approachable. _At all_
Ever again."I just scanned your site, so maybe I didn't give it a complete and fair evaluation, but it kind of looks like furry porn. And you're offended by a single momma joke?"
