Military positioning

Just a question that came up in casual conversation between Nithos and myself. We're just looking for trends and corelations.

For the purposes of this question, reserves and guards counts as military... If you have uniforms and weapons training, it counts.

In the army reserves right now. Little less than four years left on this enlistment, and I'm just putting in for a promotion. If I'm lucky I'll be a sergeant in 3 months or so.

I am definitely not a military person, though I do support them and have relatives in there.
For me it's more a mental than a physical thing. Even though I am out of shape from too many years as a professional nerd, that's nothing a little boot camp and active lifestyle couldn't fix. I am an obsessively private individual, and react very badly to people yelling orders at me without explanation -- I question authority too often to survive in such an institution.

Let's see... If I remember correctly, there was toilet scrubbing, floor scrubbing, floor waxing, boot shining, physical exercise, "Marching up and down the skway-are!" a al Monty Python, extra shifts, extra work on given shifts, going to bed late, waking up early, existing under more heightened scrutiny in general (extra inspections) and, at least once, I was even made to dig a myself a fox-hole and live/sleep outside in front of the barracks building for almost two weeks.

so... Yeah. The Army wasn't always the best place for my habits of independant thought, questioning authority, scientific skepticism, etc... Doesn't think I mean that aspect of the Army should be run differently, of course... Just that I wasn't a good fit for that part of the Army.

It does seem interesting, though, that while some of the people who would make the best Colonels and Generals would make crappy Privates and Lieutenants... But only those who make exceptional Privates or Lieutenants ever get the chance to be Colonels and Generals.

Out and proud! I served in the cavalry. In Finland all citizens have a "general duty for national defense" which basically means conscription for men. Something to do with living next door to Russia, probably. Men can opt out (but will have to do alternative service instead) and women can opt in.

When my Shaykh was in the Turkish Army he kept breaking the rules, hoping they'd throw him in the stockade. The stockade was on the other side of the wall from the bakery, and it was warm. Instead, his superiors said to themselves "We've got a smart one." Every time he got in trouble they'd promote him and give him more responsibility.

I've always teased Air Farce friends that the Air Farce was for people who wanted a snazzy uniform, but didn't want to join the military... Always adding a stereotypical wrinkled nose, mannerism, and effeminate lisp around the word "military".

And don't be baggin' on the Navy, hon... Aubrey and Hornblower, Nelson and Nimitz are -still- my heroes.

(Admittedly, this is at least in part because Nicholas Seafort and Honor Harrington are even more idealized as my heroes... The first Honor Harrington book I read made me want to change my last name.)

The Air Force takes out a three year lease with an option to buy.

Well from my experience the Artillery would dig a deep hole, put the building in it and then cover it up with dirt. God damn we loved burying stuff. Gun positions are neat and underground command posts make you feel like a kid with a secret hideout.

I did however, get to spend some time on a few bases here and there when I was still a contract IT monkey.

I have never seriously considered going into the military, but I do believe we should have a peacetime draft, that every citizen should get at least 2 years of training at 18, which if you think about is not bad at all considering that not everyong has to fire missles and carry guns. Not only would it make the system fair, but then in the event of a war every single citizen already has basic training and whatnot. Many European countries and Israel already subscribe to similar practices.

Even if there were a draft, I wouldn't go; for two reasons;
-Pacifist for religious reasons
-Female (and thus exempt from the draft in the US)

I don't judge people who believe differently than I do, necessarily, though. You have your beliefs and I have mine. Actually, the boyfriend was in the navy for all of 8 weeks before bounced because of asthma (sent him to great lakes for boot and he spent most of those 8 weeks in hospital with pneumonia)
