The idea of having neutral neutral (true neutral) be a munchkin alignment is that the player can have the character act any way they want without changing their alignment. Thing is, this depends on a DM- in my games, if a character flip-flopped their alignment a lot, they're CN, no N, as unpredictability is chaotic.

One interpretation is that true neutral characters struggle to maintain their own balance of the alignments. By this logic, very few people are true neutral, as almost everyone leans one way or another.

The other interpretation holds that true neutral characters don't really care; they just do what they need to do to survive, whether that involves mildly helping or mildly harming someone else, the do it for their own purposes, not because they enjoy helping/hurting people. By this logic, most people are true neutral, as most people just don't think about these things a lot.

Well as all RPGers of even the least kind know (like myself) Munchkins are anyone who tweaks their characters to be able to get massive amounts of treasure, xp, stats, feats, ect., while usually not being good rpers themselves (mainly because they are concerned about getting the powerful character). The joke with Neutral Neutral, is that it allows the Munchkins to pick whatever side they want, that gives the most of what they want, and then argue with the dm saying that it is "in-character" for their character.

Now, see, when I read "munchkin," I thought of The Wizard of Oz...

Really, I found all the character differentiations and examples facinating, but when he said "munchkin," I imagined small and harmless but potentially annoying people.

Ah, well, I suppose one can always learn something. :D

Well, you're certainly right about the annoying part...

More to the point, in Dungeons and Dragons there are certain weapons, spells, and magical artifacts that have alignments as well--- good, evil, lawful, and chaotic. Generally these items bestow rather drastic penalties on anyone of an opposite alignment who wields them.

One of the major oversights of the gamesystem is that there are no magical items with a "neutral" alignment, nor are there any that impose a penalty on a wielder with a neutral alignment. So a Neutral-Neutral character can wield or use artifacts of any alignment--- good, evil, lawful, chaotic--- with no penalty, even using ones with opposing alignments simultaneously.

In one short campaign I played in, the DM threw a final enemy at us; despite the fact this creature was a celestial, had slaughtered hundreds of people, was sitting on a throne made of their corpses, and, oh yeah, was barking nuts, the DM insisted he wasn't Evil or Chaotic, he was "true neutral". Which was convenient for HIM as the creature in question was wielding at least TWO powerful magical weapons of opposite alignment....

There is, in fact, a way to prevent a munchkin from ever posessing a specific magic item.

Make it intelligent. :)

I've played with too many people that love "True Neutral" characters for just the reason Ralph's describing. Hence, no one in my games if ever allowed to use that alignment unless they give me a book of really good reasons and I'm bribed heavily. ;)

BTW, Ralph, those have got to be the best examples of alignments I've ever seen. Nice job.

Luckily for me, Ms. Nydalynn loves that game, so I had a little inkling to what Ben was talking about.

That and probably one of the most annoying Munchkin alignment/class combinations:

True Neutral Cleric, he can bless, and curse all at the same tie, heal and inflict pain. This is why I never allow true neutral, had a bad experience with a TNC.

You wouldn't like the game Neverwinter Nights then.... A cleric could do that no matter what. Of course, I don't know about its upcoming sequel.

As mentioned elsewhere, like to stress 'Neutral-Neutral' and 'True Neutral' as being two diffrent things.
TN serves The Balance.
NN just *doesn't* serve Evil, Good, Chaos, or Law.

Or such is my bias take on the matter.
