It's a little known fact, but barring just a couple small scenes, the movie is actually very close to what in fact happened from a historical perspective. My mother is a history buff, and pulled out books to cite examples when I didn't believe her. It's really pretty astounding.

That takes it from a fairly good summer flick to an awesome flick in my book and so it should be in the top 50.
Yeah, but a Spartan of all people accusing the Athenians of pederasty...
Also apparently the movie left out 500 Helots.

It's a narration. It doesn't have to be entirely accurate because the story teller is going to emphasize how cool the Spartans were and how wicked the Persians are. It was well executed and entertaining, but not really a "Greatest Movie of All Time."

I dunno I studied the battle Thermopylae, and when I saw 300... I couldn't even tell what was going on in the film. just lots of yelling and dagger sticking.

One thing the prequels have going for them in spite of all the hate, is that they served to make Return of the Jedi a much more interesting and satisfying conclusion to the overall series. (And no, I don't mean "cause they were so bad they made Jedi look better by comparison".)

Darth Vader being characterized as a whiney little emo kid with attitude problems didn't improve the series at all for me thank you...

Uh weren't the Spartans actually famous for their well-made armour? And lack of trolls and satyrs. The movie got the base of it right but frankly it's like having a version of the D Day landings with a yeti in it and everyone's dressed like the Village People.

Sorry, I thought 300 was a terrible movie, I nearly walked out, and I never ever do that. The action wasn't good enough for it to be mindless fun, and the plot wasn't good enough to back up the action. Visually it looked like it had been dunked in tea and left overnight, the blood looked like globs of tar, and frankly watching an awkward rape scene is never enjoyable. Shouting doesn't make for motivation or an enjoyable main character.

It's rare I feel like I wasted money by going to the cinema but on that day I very much did. Count it up there with some list of your favourites if you must, but putting it on a 'greatest movies of all time' list just means you haven't seen enough movies.

Man I love mindless action, Crank was one of my favourite movies the other year for example, and Die Hard is one of my all time favourites, but the action in 300 just wasn't compelling.
*fast forward motion* *stab with sword* *slow motion tar-blood spurt* *repeat*

Edit: List needs more Shawshank Redemption.

Anybody who believes 300 belongs in the top 50 greatest films of all time is culturally illiterate.

Anybody who believes 300 is historically accurate is just plain illiterate.

Assault On Precinct 13 please. That movie was indistinguishable from any other under siege movie and zombie movie made in the time preiod (except with multicultural yobs instead of zombies),and every Steven Segal movie ever.

Also the Road Warrior is a bit suspect. Really that movie is just trash like today's trash.

Yeeeeeah, I wouldn't have put the Road Warrior on there, but then I didn't make it through the whole thing after getting horrible flashbacks of Mad Max 1 which was some muffled Aussies hitting each other with cars while mumbling.

It's been Mad Max that's kept me from watching Road Warrior and Thunderdome, even though I know that Thunderdome's supposed to be pretty good at least. :( God that movie was boring.

Oh man, Crank was a lot of fun. Regarding 300, the fast/slow-motion jerk was more distracting for me than anything else. Like, it could've been cool for like one scene, but they just did it over and over.

Under Siege II was the one with the train and the earthquake satellite, right? That one was so bad it's almost good again.

Not that I'm one to Neko-bash (really, I'm not), but shit, don't you have anything else to say? I think this is the only post of Neko's I've seen in months. *sigh*

Edit: Oh man, did you guys see that list from Rotten Tomatoes? They got a lot of crap for it because they tended to be movies that appealed to a wide audience while not accounting for the fact that people like some movies and love others. For example, lots of people can tolerate Toy Story II, but I bet very few people would actually call it one of their favorite movies.

The thing is, the battle with 300 Spartans did actually happen. Yes, they were all slaugthered. Yes, despite that they DID manage to at least hold off the persians long enough for the rest of the greek city-states to get their acts together. The quote "Come back with your sheild or on it" is accurate. Otherwise, I highly doubt the accuracy of that movie.

Haha this isn't a real list.

Toy story 2
Truman show
Chicken run
Monsters inc
Lord of the rings
Finding nemo
The incredibles
Murderball
The Queen
Rataouille

Half of them are Pixar cartoons. And Murderball.
This is just some 14 year old's dvd collection.

Hey I'm not doubting that there's a historical basis for the movie, but it's kinda like saying The Mummy is shockingly accurate because Egyptians did really mummify people.

Yeah, it feels wrong to me too. I mean, I liked a lot of those animated films, but...yeah. This can't be the best that film has to offer, even within those years.

I heard that metacritic and imdb have similar lists that look quite different, but I'm too lazy to look for them.

I could never compile a list of 50 movies. I doubt I could even do this for video games. It's just hard to order that many things.

That being said, I have seen Citizen Kane, which is considered by many to be the best movie of all time. It was pretty good, but it's not my favorite or anything.

I think my favorite movie is "The Lion King".
