Help Please.

Post by Wraithldr »

Ok. I'm tryin to get my site set up. I chose the FTP program FileZilla as it's been said that it's the best for beginners. I can't seem to find any type of readme for it and I would really like to start posting my comic soon. Does anyone here know how to use this program?

Hey Wraithldr, I use the WebFTP lovingly provided by the fine people at ComicGenesis but after a quick Google-ing I came up with This. Its the documentation from the guys that produce and supply FileZilla, hopefully it'll help you out. It seems that it has the relevant catergories. I downloaded the installer so I could have a squiz at the program itself and the UI seems pretty uncluttered so it shouldn't be too hard once you've had a look through a few of those help files :).

If you wanted a really quick start, you want the following fields to be filled in thusly...

Host: ftp://comicgenesis.com
Username: *The username for your comic, ie, http://*Username*.comicgenesis.com*
Password: *Whatever your password happens to be*
Port: 21

Image

Then just hit the 'Quickconnect' button and it'll log you into where you need to be :). Also, it seems to have a drag and drop interface which is pretty neat.

You'll be updating in no time ;). Hope that gets you on your way!

Actually, for Host you want ftp.YOURCOMIC.comicgenesis.com (and replace YOURCOMIC with the name of your comic).

And I'm pretty sure STRredWolf said you don't need the ftp bit. But make sure that you are connecting to your comic and not comicgenesis itself.

Your passwords won't work there...

Everything else Paradox said good.

It must just be me. I'm doing everything I've been told but I still can't manage to get anything to work.

Whenever I transfer something, I'm told that the transfer was successful, but I can't notice any change on the comic page. Even when I go to my site admin to do it manually.

Can you explain what it is you're doing, in detail?

It might be something simple, like a letter missing from a file...

Okay. What I am trying to transfer is a JPEG image file. That might be the problem right there. My connection is directly to my comic website. Now what I do is I go to my site admin, select to update/upload comic, then choose the JPEG file. I send the file and get the message...

Comic 1.jpg was successfuly uploaded

I then go to the main page of my comic, and, nothing has happened.

Ah, okay then.

How Comic Genesis works is that when you want a comic to show up, you name it for that day. So the comic for christmas last year would be called 2071225.jpg - the year, then the month, then the day.

This is so that a specific comic is shown on a specific date and if you have more ready, you can upload them and have the server automatically publish them in the future.

Since this is your first comic, name it 20080223.jpg (a few days ago) and upload it again.

Have a read through some of the tutorials on the CGWiki (link in my sig), specifically the 'Start Here' and the 'Getting Started' ones. Initially, some things will seem a little weird, but once you figure out how things work it'll al make more sense.

Okay. Did that. Is it supposed to update right away or will it do so later.

If the answer is right away, well...*sigh*... I think you know what I'm gonna say next.

It can take anywhere from a few seconds to several hours.

When you are about to request an update, look in the bottom left hand corner: if the Queue says a low number, it'll be quick.

Or, you cab just wait. The server will automatically try and update once every 24 hours.
