Hi, I'm an Author and I recently tried to set up a <a href="https://www.blogger.com/start"> Blogger </a> account and then insert it into my page. But when I tryed, mt FTP interface said that It I had insufficient permissions to create new folders. These of course being the keys to pointing, archiving and basically all around using the blogger account.
So I went to the help thread and asked the people that had been helping me along so far (Dr.Neo Lao for one) and he said that he messaged some people about it. As it would turn out, making your own folders is just not allowed.
I do see the reasoning behind this, and its not that I'm criticizing the CG staff and their ways.
But I was just wondering if there were anyone else out there that felt the way I do.
That that particular functionality (or lack their of) should be changed. I know the ability to insert that page into my comic would certainly add a level of class to my site and bring up the functionality of it to a happy new degree.
So, either way. Just throwing that out there.
Any response from other users, and of course the admins and staff would be terrific.
Respectfully.
Justin N.

This seems like something a bit better-suited to the Help forum, but... Actually, it *is* possible to create additional folders via FTP, but you need to make sure you're doing it in /workspace and not in /public_html.
Testing this out for myself, I was able to create /workspace/images/test, as well as /workspace/webpages/test. Running a manual update copied the folders over into public_html, so that the addresses for items in the folders would, in my case, be something like or
(Links don't currently work because I got rid of everything once I was sure the process had worked.)
Long story short, yes, you can make folders. Your ability to do so is just a little limited. (Unless I'm some sort of exception to this apparent ban on folder creation.)

I've made lots of folders and files directly in the public_html section before.
But I think that when the server migration was done, permissions were either re-set to what they should be or were defaulted to 'no'. The ability to create files and folders directly in the public_html section is quite useful as far as I'm concerned.
However, now that it has been turned off, several of the tutorials in the Wiki will need updating because they give instructions for things that can no longer be done.
I pm'd Kisai and Stredwolf about users creating files and folders in the public_html section and got no response from Kisai whilst Stredwolf said "people shouldn't".

An admin can feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't tags like ***advertisement*** or ***todays_comics*** converted to those big, unwieldy blocks of code when you run an update, pulling the template files from /workspace? In that case, if you're just taking, say, HTML files and dumping them into folders in /public_html, you won't be running ads, and you'll have a bunch of tags where your comics and buttons and such should be.
The above clearly doesn't apply to images and other files, but to me, it makes sense to just tell everyone "don't dump things into /public_html" and avoid confusion.

Well I went back and checked and it would apear that you are in fact correct. I can create folders in Workspace, but not in public.
Although as I had expected, this doesn't really help me. Because after following all of the instructions given by the CGWiki, it even uploaded them into the archive, but nothing displays on my page.
Buut, I really didn't intend on getting help with this so much as I wanted to start a round table on the subject of FTP permissions.
I mean, if Dr Neo wants to PM me and help work this out that would be great.
But for the most part I just wanted to see if anyone synced with me on this.
And if enough people did, then maybe some middle ground could be found.

One diffuculty with this set up is that if you want a bloggerblog, then you have to have it in workspace... since you don't have write permissions to public_html, the blogger software can't update through FTP.
This means that the blog has to be in some subdirectory of workspace, and that the url is limited to foo.comicgen.com/workspace/blog
A bit uglier than necessary, especially as the workspace symlink means that comicgenesis is still hosting all the unmodified stuff (i.e. without ads and with the raw tags).
