I need to figure out what to do with my site.

I need to figure out what to do with my site.

Post by Shishio »

Starting next week, I'm probably going to be updating my comic monthly. (First Friday of every month). If I am to have any hope of retaining and growing my audience, I need to provide new content more frequently than that, so I'll probably supplement my site with stories that don't translate well to comics, rants, humourous blog posts, and maybe even some short stories/serialized novels. (But maybe not, as I have a much harder time writing prose than comics). I may also create a joke/funny story/prank/whatever else index that readers can submit to if they're so inclined.

What I need to figure out is how to organize all of this shit. Way I see it, I have two options:

1) Keep everything on one-liners.net

Pros: I'm ahead of the game as far as promotion goes, as this is the site my audience is familiar with, links to, etc. Also, it has a high google-ranking.

Cons: It just seems weird to change the focus of my site. It's hard to explain what I mean, but the anal retentive side of me says it would be better to post my various writings and stories on a site created for that purpose than on the site that has been strictly for my webcomic for the last year-and-a-half. Not to mention the fact that I would have to give my site an overhaul to give everything equal attention.

2) Move everything to theshishioshow.com

Pros: This appeals to my anal retentive side more, as I will no longer be running a webcomic per se, but a general humour/entertainment site of which the comic is one aspect. Also, I would finally put the fucking domain to use. (I originally bought it to serialize more Shishio Show comics if I ever made them. I was also thinking of doing other things, but obviously I never got around to any of them.

Cons: I would have to start from scratch as far as promotion goes. (You might be thinking "Just link to it from your other site," but people are creatures of habit, and most of my existing readers will likely not be interested in having to alter their routine).

Of course, there's also the third option of giving everything that warrants it its own site, (especially since whichever route I go, there will be content that doesn't "fit") but I have no interest in splitting up my traffic that much.

One-liners: Come for the laughs, stay for the abuse.

If I like a comic a lot, I like to check out everything that's related to that comic, on or off the site. On the other hand, if I read a comic when I have nothing better to do, I don't check suplementary stuff, specially if it's not comics, regardless of whether they're on site on not. There may theoretically be a middle ground of people who'll like the comic but not enough to check other sites related to it. So when people read your comic, do they really like it, or do they like it so-so?

If you're contemplating the idea of promoting keeping one-liners.net anyway, why not fix up your new site with all the content and keep one-lines around as a mirror site. That way you could easy your old traffic on to your new site over time and give people the opportunity to take their sweet-ass time with getting around and switching over their links.

The ShishioShow website could be a promenent link on One-liners, you know, with lots of text indicated that readers are currently on a mirror site and to please change their links and check out the new content. That way readers who discover your site via old, unchanged links, can know which link to favorite your site on. Also, and I'm not trying to knock your other site, since my site aint much better, but if you make your new site much more professional looking and snazzy compared to your old one (which has a more bare-bones design) you also stand a better chance of ebbing the flow of onlookers to your new site as well. Just make the top-most banner the advertised switch-over and keep the old site running as usual beneath it. Your news post can also be one discribing the move.

This option also benefits you as well, because you dont have to worry about running around and switching links right away. Designing a website takes enough time as it is, so it will give you more time to focus on web design and remembering which sites may have linked you and allowing time track them down and have them switch the link over.

What in gods name is your avatar doing in that image? It looks like he's trying to take a robot from behind, and finding it painful. :o

Denial is not falsification. You can't avoid a fact just because you don't like it.

All that from 100x100 picture! The length of your dirty imagination is too much even for me.
