[ADMIN] Please back up your comic!

Post by STrRedWolf »

Everyone, if you have a webcomic with us, I highly advise you back it up RIGHT NOW.

It's a good idea, but also we may have something coming down the pipe...

does this mean everything is going to be lost thanks to the server errors and the ftp timeouts?

Most likely it's a data migration from either moving to a new server or replacing parts (possibly a drive) on the old server.

Either way, the implication is that there is the potential for data loss and so users ought to back up their data (which should be a routine function anyway). In theory, if all the data is lost from your account, you should be able to re-upload everything and be right back to where you just were after the next update.

I have all the files still on my computer anyway. So no worries here.

Hopefully.

I've crossposted this into offtopic.

Denial is not falsification. You can't avoid a fact just because you don't like it.
"Data" is not the plural of "anecdote"

So if I appear to have lost some files how long should I wait before putting them back?

Am I correct in thinking that most, if not all of the creators here have an email address on file with the admins?

This is the sort of message that needs to be mailed out TO EVERYONE!

I only read the forums occasionally. I'm sure that most of the creators aren't reading the Help Center every day.

Please get this warning out to everyone, not just the daily forum users.

Thanks,

Ed

More fun than you should ever have in a laboratory. We are not related to the Bratz toy line owned by MGA.

The only problem with that idea would be if the database that has all the authors' details isn't cross-linked to the email system.

Can you imagine trying to manually copy + paste 5,000 plus email addresses? Especially since the majority are inactive or abandoned accounts and would just be a waste of effort?

Still, it's a good idea. Maybe a service that authors needed to subscribe to and regularly re-register in order to ensure that they receive any such emergency broadcasts?

When I first signed up for CG, they recommended that you also sign up for the yahoo CG group even though it was made mostly obsolete by the forums. Still, it exists. Why not use it?

Also, wasn't this exactly the reason the keenspace_alert tag was created?
"When the keenspace administrators need to get out important information (such as info about server trouble), this tag will be replaced by an announcement. It should placed near the top of your index page. Most of the time it won't do anything"
Finally, any idea at all how long these problems will continue? If we can't do anything about it, at least if one update gets through we can warn our readers and beg them not to disappear for good...
