WCCA and Comic Genesis

Post by Americangothic »

I read this interesting article this morning from http://comixpedia.com/wccas_interview :

Quote: <<How many webcomic creators typically participate in the nomination and final rounds of voting? Has there been an increase in the number of voters each year?

We have well over 800 registered voters. While we have had an increase in voters, many of those voters seem to take part in different aspects of the process. Only about 100 took place in the nomination round, but we expect many more will take place in the final round now that they have a list of titles to choose from. >>>

Now, the reason I did not write this in the WCCA thread is because my emphasis is going to be Comic Gen.

Do you realize folks that 100 people is not a very big number? There are easily 40 of us in IRC chat on a given night, if we voted as a block next year, we could totally skew WCCA to Comic Gen.

Now I'm not saying that's gonna happen, and I'm not encouraging it either...trying to get us to do anything in a group is like herding cats.

But it is an interesting thought.

More of us should have gotten involved. 100 people is not a lot.

And there you have highlighted why the WCCAs are a waste of time.

The master is always right.

And it's entirely true...it's a funny idea to think that we could overtake it, plausable but I don't think given the oppertunity we would. Where's the fun and excitement in and award if there's no competition save from those you surround yourself with. And were we to take it over I feel that from that point on we'd only be allowed a certain amount of nominees and thus deserving comics might not make it in from us.

So many people read them (the nomination thread last year had 10 000 views) but no one participates.

Yeah. Stuffing the ballot box is the wrong way to go about it.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The trouble with all of these popularity contests is that they always turn into popularity contests.

Yeah, I think those of us who participate do so for the fun of it, not because we actually think it's the equivalent of an Eisner; mobocracy takes all the fun out of it.

I'm one of those 800 registered to vote, but I don't really know how I even got onto that list. I think I voted on something a couple years back. Now, I get emails from them reminding me each year about the WCCA. :-?

Um...did you see how many CGers were nominated for awards? I'm pretty sure that CGers nominating in unison skewed the nominations *this* year. :)

I don't really see a problem with that, however. It's very clear that any webcomic creator can participate in the WCCAs. It isn't our fault if people choose not to.

I see them mostly as a promotional opportunity.

Then again I see almost everything as a promotional opportunity.

I'm under no illusion that being nominated for an award means I'm any better than those who weren't nominated.

all it means is that more people who think you should have been nominated were participating.

still, even though only 100 nominated comics, 800 looked at that list and clicked some to read. It's not perfect, but it does tend to attract a little bit of traffic. Ask Miss "Ishouldn'thavebeennominatedandnowI'mgoingtokillCeej&Dawg"... or better known as Mercury Hat

Nah. Going in as a block just skews what people have already identified as a popularity contest into a really bad version of Australian Idol. Real talent might quickly be sent packing because this person hear has sex appeal.

I'll slink back into the shadows again now.

I'm always proud to have zero nominations.

At least, I don't think I was nominated for anything. Most years I don't even check. Too busy making webcomics and working on a life.
