Actually, I've tried using Zoetrope, and that's been rather helpful, but I tend to get behind on my own reviews.

I was a member of Critters for two years and found the experience tremendously helpful. The interesting thing is I found the process of critiquing more helpful than actually being critiqued. (Although many of the critiques I recieved were helpful.) Basically, the process of evaluating other people's work helped me see the flaws in my own story(ies).

I would agree, however, that some of the critiques can be worthless, and evaluating a critique is more art than science. But I still think Critters is a great place to get started. And in time, you will get to know some of the regulars. (One is now my local writing partner.)

OSC's Hatrack group, in my experience, was worthless and poorly run. The administrator lumped people into groups and then pretty much ignored them for several months. If your group didn't have any natural leaders, someone who would push everyone else to submit work and adhere to schedules, it [the group] fell apart quickly. Any complaints to the admin were ignored. (She never seemed to check her email.) This was three years ago. Things might have improved since then, but at the time it was a disorganized mess.

Nowadays I have trusted first readers who like my writing but aren't afraid to rip it to shreds.

Anyone have any other good workshops to recommend? I need to get into one again, for when I go back to prose writing.

Actually it isn't! At least, it wasn't for pay when I signed up.
