Child's Play

Post by STrRedWolf »

It's time I did something on CG: The charity Child's Play, which sends 100% of cash, games, books, and more, will be getting rotation time on our newsbox.

Keenspot itself has become a silver sponsor and is already dedicating newsbox time for Child's Play. We will be doing the same, giving them 50% of the rotation to Child's Play.

Kelly I know your heart is in the right place, but the newsbox is for CG sites. It would have been better for KeenSPOT to put it in the ad rotation. As it is, there is no way to have exactly half point to childsplay anyway, just pseudo-randomly picking it

I know, they're probably better places to put it. Keenspot's put it in their newsbox, and I asked about putting it in the newsbox and the ad banner. Chris said newsbox. I don't know if Darren will put it in the ads system-wide.

Anyway, it's live now. If you don't have a ***newsbox*** tag in your comic's indextemplate.html, folks, THEN WHAT ARE YOU DOING, STARING AT THIS PAGE?!? :)

Well it doesn't matter one way or the other how it's done. Though I'd probably go with sticking a bit flipping flag so every second newsbox would show the childs play batter as opposed to tinkering with the ad insertion code which would only make it show up as often as any other newsbox.

I doubt we could carry that state. I just have it randomly select a number between 1 and 10 inclusive, and if it's over five the Child's Play ad displays. I tried to make sure any looping or multiple newsbox image requests.

I will never argue against giving money to worthy charities, but maybe you could consider more than one charity? Child's Play does not assist any of the children's hospitals anywhere near where I live, while other worthy charities are more widespread in their assistance.

The way you've described setting up the insertion for Child's Play suggests it would be simple to insert other charities - if the generator hits 1-5 do a random comic, 6, do charity X, 7, charity Y, 8, charity Z, and so on.

well, I've already donated to Child's Play and plugged them on my site. Don't mind a little newsbox time going to them.

Is this for the December holiday time only, or forevers?

Nope. Childs Play has ranked up over one million dollars over the two months, and finished for this year. So the newsbox has now reverted back to normal, 24/7 comic pimping status.
