Life throwing ya curves.

Last night when I was out I got to thinking just how different my life is from the time I've left home roughly 13 years ago. Made me go Damn! Never in a million would I thought I'll be where I'm at now.

At 18, I was a redneck who's only travel in the Midwest. Was about to take my first plane trip and to out of the US too! My world was my family - literally.

At 31, I've been many other states outside of the Midwest. Now have traveled outside of the US three times. Currently living in the big, bad city of St. Louis. Living in the city is something this country girl would have never thought she'll be doing. Let alone drinking Starbucks outside on the patio in the Loop on a cold, fall night.

I'm enjoying these curve balls. Can't wait to see where they takes me.

Anyone care to share their curve balls?

Well, 8.5 years ago I met this really weird geeky looking guy and turned him down when he asked me out. The curveball there is that now I'm married to him!

The other curveballs aren't so good. I'd planned to be acting on Broadway by now, but instead I'm stuck in Branson.

Twenty years ago, my parents and I (me being 14 at the time) were living in Minnesota. My father was pulling down way over 100,000 a year selling medical implant supplies to the Mayo Clinic, and we had a very sweet life.

Fifteen years ago, I was 19. My parents were in Cincinnati, and I was in college (my first college!) as a freshman - Miami University of Oxford, Ohio.

Ten years ago, I was 24 and living in Cleveland. At that point I think I was enrolled in CSU (my second college), and living on my own in a nice bachelor pad. I was earning money working three jobs.

Five years ago I was 29, and had moved in with my girlfriend (now wife) and was working in St. Louis for a transformer company. We'd just moved a couple months previously into a very nice home. I had probably just told her not to plan for my 30th birthday, since at age 30, I planned not to celebrate them much anymore. We got a new cat, named Flint about that time. He was barely a year old then and every bit the kitten.

I don't try to predict my future. I really make an effort to enjoy the changes my life has brought me through the years.

Hot damn, Cortland, you really did well for yourself!

I sort of think I'm too young to have had many curveballs. If anything, my life has always been somewhat curvey.

18 years ago I lived in Switzerland for a bit.

Six years ago I decided to go out of state for school.

Three years ago I decided to go on an archeological dig in Chile.

A year and a half ago I decided to go to graduate school and get my Masters in museum studies.

You see what I mean? I don't know know that there's been any one life shattering event, but rather lots of little redirections. However, if I actually ever make it in the comic business world, I will SO count that as one.

I think my only huge changes have been internal. Years ago I was a very self-concious, pretentious SOB. These days I'm very happy, easy-going, and ambitious. Years ago I hated myself, and these days I like myself. It's amazing what a good role model can do.

Same here. Biggest change was going to college, and even that's not so different besides location. I'm only 17.

I'd have to agree with MM, saying that I think I'm to young to be thrown to many curves.

I will say one thing.
Never thought I would graduate from a school, that your popularity is dependent on the size of your belt buckel and cowboy hat.

Hmm, a little bit to young to see any major changes, heck when I went to college I only moved 10 blocks : P

Probably the biggest suprise is my current relationship with my girlfriend who lives halfway across the US. Especially considering how merciless I was to War and Mercury Hat in the chat, never thought I'd end up part of the 'CG hookup group'.

One BIG curveball coming up for me is when I move up there, hopefullly in less than a year. Unlike Mrs. Rkolter I'll be moving from the big city to the (relative) country (okay, it'll still be a city, but my standards are high : P)

The only curveball I can think of is joining Army ROTC. The Army has quite literally changed my life and changed me. I've realized so much about who I am and it's been a total mindjob coming to grips with some of these changes/realizations.

I'm still too young and have led too much of a sheltered life to have many major curveballs.

During my seventh birthday party, my sister (aged 8) had a stroke which left her with almost literally half a brain. That's big sisters for you; they always have to be the center of attention.

Earlier this year she presented a paper at an international art therapy conference in Denmark. Part of the paper was about her recovery from severe brain damage. So, not only has she recovered, she's even found a way to cash in on her experience. I'd say that's a pretty neat curve.

The biggest curve in my own life so far has been being a math whiz all through school, then suddenly deciding to transfer to English Lit in my second year of university.

I'll be Australian...and use the term off-break instead. Those who know cricket understand me.

Not really too much for me. I'm sure things have changed around, but in a lot of ways I'm in much the same place. I went to school...I work in one. I lived in the bush...I built a house in the bush. I suppose one thing I never really thought would happen when I was 10 was that now at 28, my friends are all still 10...
